Police eject fan from Texas high school basketball game after he used racial taunt

A man who told a referee to “Go back to Mexico” was removed from a high school basketball game on Friday.

A video taken during the game and posted on social media shows the man being escorted out of the Sherman High School gymnasium. As the man is walking out spectators can be heard clapping and singing “goodbye.”

Attempts to reach Sherman school district officials and the person who posted the video on Twitter were unsuccessful on Monday.

School officials at Sherman High School asked Sgt. Chris Carson to escort the spectator from school property, and there was no arrest, said spokesman Sgt. Brett Mullen. The boys basketball team hosted Melissa. Sherman is 90 miles northeast of Fort Worth.

Because no criminal trespass warning was issued and no arrest was made, the spectator is not permanently banned from Sherman school property, Mullen said.

Police said it is not known whether the person who was escorted out of the gymnasium was a Sherman resident or visiting from another area.
