Brock's baseball season ends in 3A regional final
While Brock and Van Alstyne battled the weather Thursday night at Dallas Baptist, it was pace of play that ended up being a friend to both teams.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, it also spelled a quick end to a deep playoff run as Van Alstyne got the sweep in this best-of-three Class 3A Region II series by 4-3 and 7-2 scores.
The Panthers advance to the state tournament next week in Austin.
Van Alstyne (31-3-2) made certain to deliver the dramatics in Game 2, waiting until the top of the seventh to rev its offensive engine.
The Panthers rallied for six runs off Brock starter Seth Boleman to take the lead and close things out.
First baseman Trey Jones had the game-winner with an RBI single to center field that scored Bryce Moody.
Facing a 1-0 deficit, Brock (27-10) scored twice in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Doc Bruner and a sacrifice fly by Jansen Ivie.
Bruner’s infield hit scored Titus Gossett, who began the rally with a double to left field. Ivie’s sacrifice fly scored Gabe Mendoza.
Van Alstyne’s early run came in the fourth inning after Luke Hundt singled to right field.
He scored on a fielder’s choice by Anthony Novillo.
In Game 1, the game was tied at 3 in the seventh inning before Van Alstyne loaded the bases against Boleman, who had relieved Gossett.
Boleman walked leadoff hitter Will Jones to force in Camden Cooper and end the game.
Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Eagles tied the game on a two-run single by Jordan Andrae that scored Boleman and Gossett.
Brock took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning Ivie’s RBI single to center field.
