Brock, Peaster to meet with state on line

Special to the Weatherford Star-Telegram

The Peaster Lady Greyhounds are making their first regional finals appearance. Meanwhile, the Brock Lady Eagles are in their sixth regional final since 2001.

Brock is seeking its fifth state appearance in that span. To get there, they will have to get past a Peaster squad that is playing its best softball in two decades when they tangle in the Class 3A Region II championship series.

Details of the series were still being decided at press time.

The showdown was set up when Brock (35-3) swept Redwater (25-8) 8-3 and 7-5 and Peaster (23-6) outlasted Hooks (30-4) in three games. The Lady Greyhounds won the first game 2-1, lost the second 2-1, and won the third 7-3.

While Brock is in the playoffs for a 10th straight season, Peaster is in for the first time since 1997. The Lady Greyhounds last won a playoff game in 1995, when they reached the regional semifinals.

But after finishing third in District 11-3A, which Brock won, the Lady Greyhounds got on a roll in the postseason. They swept Maypearl in bidistrict in a best-of-three series, followed by single-game playoff wins over S&S Consolidated and Howe, and their recent series win over Hooks.

"We are excite to be in this position. Any Peaster-Brock game is big to those involved," Peaster coach Matt Chapman said. "We are definitely underdogs playing the district champs, but we've been underdogs the entire playoffs. Our kids have nothing to lose, and I believe we will play that way."

The Lady Greyhounds have won eight out of nine since a 14-4 loss to Brock in the second round of district. They also lost to the Lady Eagles in the first half of league play, 4-0.

Brock enters the series on a 17-game winning streak. In the postseason the Lady Eagles have won single-game playoffs over Sunnyvale and Pottsboro before sweeping a best-of-three series against Palmer and Redwater.

In the wins over Redwater, Cara Tolar led Brock at the plate with five hits that included two home runs, a triple and three RBI. Mattye Tyler had four hits, including a home run, two doubles and four RBI.

Peaster was led by Allie Arnold, Baylee Chapman and Katie Ruddy with four hits each. Arnold had two doubles and three RBI, all of the Lady Greyhounds' runs in the first two games. Chapman had a triple and two RBI, and Ruddy had a double and RBI.

Riley Melton pitched all three games for the Lady Greyhounds.
