Hallsville’s Bobcat Radio apologizes for insensitive comment about Brewer player
Hallsville’s Bobcat Radio apologized for its broadcaster saying he “wouldn’t be mad” if a White Settlement Brewer softball player got hit in the head Wednesday during Game 1 of a UIL high school softball Class 5A Division II state semifinal series at Athens High School.
The Bobcat Radio Facebook account said the following in a comment:
“We have spoken at length with the commentator involved, who is deeply devastated and filled with regret over his words. He wants to make it unequivocally clear that he meant absolutely no malice or harm to the player, her family, or anyone on or off the field. It was a completely thoughtless lapse in judgment and a poor choice of words in the heat of the moment, but it does not reflect his actual heart or intent.
“In reality, he is incredibly impressed by her as a player, loves the confidence she plays with, and highly respects her competitive spirit. Anyone who knows him knows he would never truly wish injury upon anyone. He is profoundly sorry for how his words came out, wants to see this young lady continue to excel on the field, and is deeply apologetic for the distress his comments have caused.
“We want to state clearly that wishing pain or injury on any youth athlete is entirely unacceptable and completely contrary to our organizational values. We want to publicly commend the Brewer team, staff, and fans they showed toward our injured second baseman earlier in the game. This makes our words and comments more devastating.
“We wish the best of luck to all of the athletes and their coaching staff, and hope everyone remains safe during the upcoming games, as well as traveling to and from.
“We offer our sincerest, unreserved apologies to the athlete, her family, and the entire Brewer community. We are fully committed to ensuring our broadcasts uphold the highest standards of respect and decency moving forward.”
The Star-Telegram reached out to Hallsville ISD and Bobcat Radio requesting comment Friday and has not received a response.
Hallsville ISD removed the Wednesday broadcast from its social media channels. It originally aired on Bobcat Radio (104.9 FM in Hallsville), which is a non-profit project owned by the Hallsville Independent School District and managed by the Hallsville ISD Technology department.
Bobcat Radio did not broadcast the remaining games of Brewer and Hallsville’s state semifinal series. Their Facebook directed Hallsville fans to listen to the KMHT Radio (103.9 FM) broadcast.
