Prominent North Texas Class 4A football coach to take over at Decatur
Glen Rose head football coach Cliff Watkins is set to become the next head football coach and athletic director at Decatur High School, according to Matt Stepp of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
Watkins’ appointment to the position is pending board approval, which is slated to take place Monday. Decatur ISD will fill a vacancy left by former head coach Steve Huff, who left for a coaching job in Oklahoma.
During his time at Glen Rose, Watkins created a consistent Class 4A powerhouse. The Tigers won 10 consecutive undefeated district titles with a stunning 46-0 district record.
In 2025, Glen Rose posted a 6-6 overall record and went 5-0 in district play prior to a 39-27 area round loss to Seminole. In that season the Tigers took Fort Worth-area Class 4A power Alvarado to its limit in a 55-50 loss.
Glen Rose made the state semifinals in 2022 and 2023 and made it to the regional semifinals six times. Prior to his time with the Tigers, he served as Eastland’s head coach and had assistant coaching stints with Stephenville, Midland Legacy, Breckenridge and Cisco.
In 2025, Decatur posted an 8-4 overall record en route to a regional semifinal loss to Celina. The Eagles finished second in District 5-4A Division I behind Springtown. In 2022 and 2023, Decatur made state semifinal appearances.
