Southlake Carroll senior linebacker and defensive end Marcus Brouse announced his commitment to SMU on Monday night.

Brouse, a Star-Telegram All-Area First Team selection, posted 63 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, 22 pressures, an interception returned for a TD and two forced fumbles in a strong senior season that saw the Dragons make a run to the Class 6A Division II state semifinals.

He’ll reunite with former Carroll head coach Riley Dodge, who joined SMU as a tight ends coach and pass game coordinator after this season.

Brouse, with a 6-foot, 223-pound frame, earned the respect of his teammates and was voted as a team captain. He didn’t have the recruiting stars, but that certainly didn’t stop his production, as he was named the District 4-6A Defensive Player of the Year.

In a unit that conceded 12.5 points per contest, Brouse was a crucial component, whether he was playing on the line or behind it. He showcased a versatile ability to attack the ball with speed and big hits, and can also analyze the opponent’s scheme and get to the ball in a hurry.
