Carroll ISD names next head football coach at Southlake Carroll

After a nationwide search, the Southlake Carroll Dragons found their next head football coach, and it turns out, they didn’t have to look far.

Carroll ISD promoted defensive coordinator and associate head coach Lee Munn to head football coach at Southlake Carroll at Monday’s Board of Trustees meeting. Since 2018, Munn had served as a coordinator under Riley Dodge, who departed to become SMU’s passing game coordinator and tight ends coach.

“It’s pretty surreal,” Munn told the Star-Telegram. “I never really thought that I would be the head coach here. I knew I wanted to become a head coach eventually, at some point. And I was kind of just patiently waiting for the right job to open up. Never with the intention that it would be here.

“So, it’s just an absolute honor to be the 12th head coach in Southlake Carroll’s history. And to continue the rich tradition that we have.”

Munn recently received a flurry of endorsements from local coaches, several current players, former players, NCAA Division I athletes and one high-profile NFL player: Miami Dolphins quarterback Quinn Ewers.

The former Carroll quarterback showed up to Monday’s board meeting to support Munn, who was an assistant coach during his high school days. Plenty of current players, dressed in black and Carroll green with fading bleach blonde hair dyed during their recent playoff run, were also in attendance.

The meeting room erupted in cheers when the hiring became official. Players then crowded around Munn and broke out in a “Yes” chant, which has become a Carroll football tradition.

During Dodge’s tenure, Munn helped power the Dragons to a 108-10 total record, four regional titles and two state championship appearances.

The 2025 season was arguably Munn’s best. His unit conceded 12.5 points per game, and the Dragons reached the Class 6A Division II state semifinals.

Technically, Munn already has a 1-0 record as the Dragons’ leader. He stepped in for Riley Dodge, who had to miss a 2020 state semifinal clash against Duncanville. The Dragons seized a 34-27 victory.

Board of Trustees President Cameron Bryan spoke after the decision was made official. He ended his speech with the following statement:

“We intend to always protect the tradition,” Bryan said. “Coach Munn, the lights will certainly be bright. The expectations will be high, and the responsibility will be real. We believe in you, coach. Now, let’s go win another state championship.”

Munn began his coaching career at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor as a graduate assistant. He then had stints at Marble Falls and Austin Westlake before joining Carroll’s staff at 29 years old.

“I am incredibly honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Head Football Coach at Carroll,” Munn said. “This program, this community, and these student-athletes mean a great deal to me. I am committed to building on the tradition of excellence that defines our Dragons while continuing to develop young men of character, discipline, and heart.”
