Hamilton downs Joaquin to win championship
For the first time in program history, the Hamilton Bulldogs are state champions.
Hamilton (12-2) defeared Joaquin 21-7 in the Class 2A Division I state championship Wednesday. Halston Halle earned Offensive Most Valuable Player honors with 93 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 22 carries.
Pierce Summers led all receivers with 71 yards on three catches.
The defense, which recovered three fumbles, was led by Bret Bauman, who recorded 16 tackles en route to Defensive MVP honors.
The Bulldog defense made timely stops, holding Joaquin to 8 of 13 conversions facing third down and 2 of 5 facing fourth down.
Joaquin (11-5) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but that was the only score the Rams mustered against Hamilton’s stout defense. The Bulldogs took a 14-7 lead into the half and added another score in the third quarter.
Jayton drops 99 points on Richland Springs to win title
In the Class 1A Division II six man state championship, Jayton seized a 99-54 victory over Richland Springs Wednesday to win back-to-back state titles. Jayton has won four state titles in six appearances.
Jayton (15-0) took a 26-16 lead into the second quarter and a 53-30 lead into the half. The Jaybirds continued the offensive onsalught en route to a mercy rule finish late in the fourth quarter.
Jayton’s Bode Ham had a historic performance that earned him both Offensive Most Valuable Player and Defensive Most Valuable Player honors. He rushed for 430 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also passed for 118 yards and three TDs.
On defense, he made eight total tackles, three tackles for a loss and broke up a pass.
As a team Jayton averaged 12.5 yards per carry. Richland Springs (12-2) was looking for its 10th state championship.
Gordon throttles Rankin, establishes six man dynasty
Gordon defeated Rankin 69-22 in the Class 1A Division I six man state championship with a walk off touchdown Wednesday to claim its third consecutive state title. The contest ended in the third quarter due to a mercy rule.
Air Force pledge Stryker Reed earned Offensive Most Valuable Player honors, rushing for 160 yards and 4 touchdowns. He added 53 yards through the air on two completions.
Ry Reed was also a strong contributor with 42 receiving yards, 52 rushing yards and 3 total touchdowns.
Brayden Walters earned Defensive MVP honors with 7.5 tackles, a tackle for a loss and an interception. In total, the defense had four takeaways.
As a team, Gordon (14-0) averaged 21.2 yards per carry. The Longhorns ran 16 total plays to Rankin’s 47. The Rankin Red Devils were aiming for their first state championship in their second state title game appearance.
By completing another perfect season, Gordon has extended its winning streak to 44 games. The six-man powerhouse has won three consecutive titles via mercy rule.
Gordon has won five state championships in five appearances.
