Longtime Azle football coach will not return next season
Longtime Azle head football coach Devon Dorris will not return to the program next season, he announced Friday via social media.
Dorris, an Azle alum, has led the Hornets for 16 years and has spent 23 seasons with the program.
“I hope I have made a positive impact on the countless students and athletes I have come into contact with because those before me had a profound impact on me,” Dorris wrote on X. “To the coaches who have helped create the vision of success alongside me, Thank you!
“So many countless hours working on a collective vision and being away from your own family. I pray the moments, memories, and successes we had together will never fade.”
Dorris also thanked Azle athletes for helping to carry out his vision and for the unforgettable memories over the years.
“Thank you for helping me grow as a leader and as a person,” Dorris wrote. “I pray I have impacted you as much as you have impacted me.”
Azle went 2-8 this season (2-6 in District 3-5A Division I), a step back from a stellar 2024 season that saw the Hornets finish 7-4 and reach the playoffs.
Dorris’ most successful run started in 2018, when Azle advanced to the area round in three straight seasons. The 2018 team that sparked the stellar stretch also went on an undefeated run to win a district championship.
The Hornets also made the playoffs in 2014, advancing past the area round, taking down Fort Worth Dunbar and Burleson.
