Azle puts Burleson away in second half
Jamie King rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two more Friday night as Azle used a 28-point third quarter to pull away from Burleson 45-20 in a Class 5A Division I area playoff at Birdville Fine Arts and Athletic Complex.
Azle (11-1) set a school record for wins in a season and advanced to play Canutillo or San Angelo Lake View at a site and time to be determined.
Burleson (6-6) advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and only the third time in school history.
Azle expanded a 14-6 halftime lead into a 42-6 blowout after a blocked punt, two fumble recoveries and an interception in the third quarter.
King’s third rushing touchdown on the second play of the second half gave Azle a 21-6 lead. After Chase Smith’s 1-yard run added to the lead, King threw two touchdown passes to Matt Delprincipe.
King scored on runs of 26 and 3 yards on Azle’s first two possessions of the game and led 14-6 at halftime.
Taylor Bissell cut into a 7-0 deficit with a 47-yard reception from Preston Paden, and Burleson had chances to rally in the second quarter, but a missed field goal and a goal-line stand left the Elks trailing at intermission.
Burleson seniors Micah Shelton and Trent Eberhart scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter to narrow the deficit.
