What did we learn in Week 10? Several area squads kept playoff hopes alive
What did we learn in Week 10 of Texas high school football?
Here are high school sports editor Charles Baggarly’s biggest takeaways from the action:
Brewer on verge of playoff berth
Brewer lost to Denton Ryan 41-7 on Thursday. Still, the Bears are in a good position to extend their season.
If Brewer defeats Granbury in Week 11, it will clinch a postseason berth out of District 3-5A Division I, given a victory over Birdville in Week 8. The Bears will face the Pirates at 7 p.m. Friday at Brewer.
Even if Brewer falls to Granbury, it still has a good chance at forcing a favorable tiebreaker, as Birdville is facing state power Denton Ryan next. Brewer last made the playoffs in 2021.
Denton still has the ability to trigger a three-way tiebreaker with Brewer and Birdville. Brewer, however, has wins over both squads. Birdville kept its playoff hopes alive with a 38-26 victory over Fossil Ridge on Friday.
District 4-6A chaos
When Haslet Eaton fell 13-8 to Keller Timber Creek on Friday, its playoff chances took a hit.
Eaton sits in seventh place with a 2-5 record in District 4-6A, but still has a chance to make the postseason.
Three teams are right above Eaton with 3-4 district records: L.D. Bell, Keller Central and Keller.
L.D. Bell and Keller Central have extremely tough games to close the season.
Bell will face Euless Trinity at 7 p.m. Thursday at Pennington Field. Although anything can happen in a rivalry game, the Trojans will be the favorite. Bell, however, has shown an ability to rise to the occasion under pressure.
Keller Central will face Byron Nelson at 7 p.m. Friday at Keller ISD Stadium. The Bobcats are red hot and have won six straight district games.
The most consequential regular-season finale is arguably Keller vs. Eaton at 7 p.m. Friday at Northwest ISD Stadium. The Eagles need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, and the Indians can clinch a spot with a victory and losses from Bell and Central.
If Eaton defeats Keller, there could be a four-way tiebreaker for the last playoff spot.
Fort Worth Carter-Riverside’s playoff hopes are alive
Fort Worth Southwest controls its playoff destiny. With a win over Decatur in Week 11, the Raiders are in, but beating the Eagles is easier said than done.
If Southwest falls to Decatur at 7 p.m. Friday at Eagle Stadium, Fort Worth Carter-Riverside still has a chance to make the postseason, somewhere it hasn’t been since 1995.
The Riverside Eagles helped their case with a 49-32 victory over Diamond Hill-Jarvis on Friday.
Carter-Riverside still needs a victory over Fort Worth Western Hills at 8 p.m. Friday at Scarborough-Handley Field. That could potentially trigger a favorable three-way tiebreaker for Riverside and Eastern Hills, leaving Southwest on the outside.
District 3-6A scenarios
With a 2-4 District 3-6A record and no regular-season games remaining, Mansfield Legacy no longer controls its playoff chances.
The good news for the Broncos is that Boswell and Crowley, both with 2-3 district records, have challenging games to close the regular season.
If Boswell defeats Lake Ridge at 7 p.m. Friday at Newsom Stadium, the Pioneers will secure the fourth and final playoff spot, unless Crowley pulls off an upset of North Crowley at 7 p.m. Thursday at Crowley ISD Stadium.
Boswell defeated Weatherford 44-35 on Friday to boost its chances.
Mansfield isn’t locked into the postseason just yet, but can secure a spot with a win over Weatherford.
If Boswell and Crowley lose, which is a strong possibility, that sets up a three-way tiebreaker between Boswell, Crowley and Mansfield Legacy.
Brock cements status as championship contender
Brock cruised to a 28-7 victory over Graham, claiming the District 3-4A Division II championship and cementing its status as a threat to win a state championship.
Brock made the state semifinals last season, and it appears it has grown as a program since then. The Eagles are ranked No. 3 in 4A Division II by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
Through Week 10, Brock hasn’t found itself in a close game, winning all contests by 21 or more. The Eagles are scoring 54.4 points per game and have allowed 88 points on the season.
Brock, one of the more consistent teams in the Fort Worth area, is in its second year in Class 4A Division II, and is adapting to the competition well.
However, Brock is still searching for the big win. Since losing in the state championship game in 2021 and 2022, the Eagles have fallen in the state semifinals in consecutive years.
