White Settlement Brewer takes down Birdville, moves closer toward playoff berth

In a pivotal District 3-5A Division I clash against White Settlement Brewer with significant playoff implications on the line, Birdville needed a score facing fourth down in the final moments of the fourth quarter.

The winner would take a crucial step toward securing the district’s fourth and final postseason berth. Amidst the pressure, Brewer defensive lineman Colton Plemons rose to the occasion, sealing the 32-27 victory with a sack on Friday at Birdville FA/AC.

“I just saw my opening hit,” Plemons said. “A little dip and rip on ‘em. I just did what I was taught by my amazing coaches. ... I’m blessed to be able to do this. ... I finally stepped up for my team and played my role.”

With the win, Brewer (5-2, 3-2) took a significant advantage in the race for the district’s fourth and final playoff spot, considering Birdville now has three district losses. Brewer head coach Marte Amrine, in his first year at the helm, said the team’s effort was evident.

“Our guys have grown up so much over this first year in our program,” Amrine said. “I’m so proud of them. It took all of us. ... The fight that they had and the belief in each other, and then just blowing up and making a play right there at the end — that was huge.”

Running back Kameron Coleman was the driving force of the offense with 200 yards on 19 carries. Amrine says he loves carrying the responsibility.

“He works so hard in practice,” Amrine said of Coleman. “He is getting himself ready for the games. Because we count on him a lot. ... Whether it takes 30 times or whether it takes 20. Whatever that number is for us to get things done, that’s what its going to take.”

In the first half, both squads went back and forth. Coleman opened the scoring with a 3-yard scamper, and Birdville responded with a 9-yard TD reception from Triston Spain. After Birdville’s defense notched a safety with the ball rolling out of the back of the end zone, Coleman brought the Bears back, breaking away for a 69-yard score.

The next score was a 17-yard TD pass from Birdville QB Zach Wells to Spain that was set up by a blocked punt. The Bears recaptured the lead with a wide-open 54-yard TD reception from Ty Salas, but Birdville struck back with a 4-yard TD pass from Wells to Montoya to take a 21-20 lead into the break.

“They played hard,” Amrine said of Birdville. “And we knew that going in. They have great schemes on both sides. They are coached very well, and they have speed.”

In the third quarter, Coleman’s efficiency opened up the field, and the Bears capitalized with a 7-yard TD reception from tight end Jovan Sparkman. But the Hawks stayed composed, and Spain notched his third score of the game, a 35-yarder, while facing fourth down.

Both offenses traded blows, with Brewer receiver Devan Roberts landing the last one. He separated himself from the defense and found some green for a 73-yard TD, giving Brewer a 32-27 lead with 1:33 remaining in the third quarter.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Birdville’s Jacob Martinez put the Hawks in a great position to win with an interception, but the offense was unable to capitalize in the red zone as Brewer’s defense sealed the deal.

Up next, Brewer will host Keller Fossil Ridge Friday, Oct. 24. Although the Bears put themselves in a stellar position, nothing is guaranteed.

“We’ve got to continue every week to get better,” Amrine said. “That’s what our whole goal is. We never worry about who we are playing. We worry about just making sure that we get better every week. And if we do that, the results take care of themselves.”
