The Star-Telegram is releasing its list of Fort Worth-area players to watch by position groups, starting with quarterbacks.

1. Angelo Renda, Senior, Southlake Carroll

Renda was a force in the Dragons’ run to the Class 6A Division II state championship game last season, throwing for 3,899 yards and 40 touchdowns. He took on increased responsibility on the ground due to injuries in the running back room and showcased toughness, rushing for 667 yards and 14 TDS.

Renda, a Pittsburgh pledge, is 247Sports’ No. 230-ranked class of 2026 player. As a junior, he earned Star-Telegram All-Area First Team honors. He returns to an offense featuring elite weapons, such as Ohio State commit Brock Boyd, and an offensive line that is arguably the best in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

2. Jacob “JT” Torres, Junior, North Crowley

Torres, a transfer from Burleson Centennial, returned to North Crowley after a successful sophomore campaign with the Spartans that earned him District 7-5A Division I Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors. He passed for over 2,000 yards, rushed for 200 and had 23 touchdowns.

Although his role as a starter is not guaranteed, Torres could thrive within North Crowley’s offense as the Panthers look to repeat as state champions in Class 6A Division I. One of his main targets will be sophomore Damarion Mays, who already has offers from TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Ohio State and more.

3. Gavin Beard, Senior, Fort Worth All Saints

Beard transferred to All Saints from Aledo, where he threw for 2,629 yards and 36 touchdowns. He has experience at the highest level, and will put it to good use as the Saints look to repeat as TAPPS Division II state champions. The team lost some talent, but expect Beard to pick up where he left off with a young, hungry offense.

4. Quinn Murphy, Senior, Argyle Liberty Christian

Murphy, a Baylor pledge, is back after leading the Warriors to a TAPPS Division I state title. He was an offensive machine, throwing for 3,061 yards and 43 touchdowns within head coach Jason Witten’s offense. He is 247Sports’ No. 190 class of 2026 player in Texas.

5. Bodey Weaver, Senior, Colleyville Heritage

Weaver, also a basketball standout, gained valuable experience last season against tough 5A Division II competition, earning first team all district honors. Now, he’ll look to lead a revamped and well-rounded Heritage offense that will rely on his leadership. As a junior, he threw for 1,780 yards and 19 TDs, and he is poised to improve on those numbers as a senior.

6. Brennan Barton, Senior, Benbrook

Barton made history with the Benbrook Bobcats last season, securing Fort Worth ISD’s first area-round victory in 24 years and earning all-district honors. Now, he is back after throwing for 1,927 yards and 18 touchdown passes. He impressed during 7 on 7 season and was named Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s District 4-4A Division II preseason offensive MVP.

7. Chevy Andrews, Senior, Arlington Seguin

Andrews, who runs a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, was extremely productive for Seguin, passing for over 2,700 yards and recording 36 touchdowns. He will be a key player as Seguin looks to take the next step in District 3-5A Division II. Andrews earned second-team all-district honors last season.

8. Kaeden Grant, Senior, Arlington Heights

Grant is back to lead the Arlington Heights offense after passing for 1,716 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior. He is a strong dual threat, as he rushed for 434 yards and 12 TDs last season. Now, he’ll look to power Heights to a district title. Grant is an all-around athlete; as a basketball player, he was named district defensive player of the year.

9. Derrick Vowell, Senior, Azle

Vowell’s volume was heavy as the pro-style leader of Azle’s offense. He passed for 2,154 yards and 22 touchdowns in an extremely tough district with Aledo, Richland and Denton Ryan as opponents. The Hornets were able to snag a playoff spot and will look to do the same this season through Vowell’s proven arm. He has a proven target in senior standout wide receiver Aiden Mackey.

10. Coleman Cravens, Senior, Arlington

In a heavily competitive District 8-6A, Arlington will rely on Coleman Cravens’ experience. The continuity will help, especially considering 2024 district champion Arlington Bowie lost a fair amount of offensive talent. As a junior, he threw for 1,845 yards and 14 TDs.
