Grapevine stuns Argyle in thriller, advances to state semifinal
Grapevine (11-10-4) finished fourth in District 6-5A, but the Mustangs aren’t playing like a team that secured the last spot in the Class 5A Division 2 high school soccer playoffs.
They had a tall task in Argyle (18-3-1), the District 6-5A champion, especially considering the Eagles had defeated Grapevine twice in district play. In the end, a playoff victory is what matters most. The Mustangs, in a dramatic classic, advanced with a 5-3 penalty kick shootout victory.
Grapevine was down 2-0 with 24 minutes remaining and stormed from behind to tie the game. Grapevine’s Chloe Osteen scored the equalizer with two minutes left in regulation. Argyle, however, quickly regained the lead with a goal from Sara Begaj, but, in the final minute, Grapevine’s Maddison Patton quickly responded with a 40-yard strike to force overtime.
Both squads went scoreless in overtime, and Grapevine goalkeeper Brooke Bereuter kept the game tied. She continued her elite play in the shootout, paving the way for the Mustangs to take a 5-3 advantage and the victory.
Grapevine has now made the state tournament in four of the past five seasons, with their last resulting in a 5A state championship in the 2023 campaign. Starting with the 2015 season, the Mustangs have made a state semifinal seven times, establishing themselves as a girls soccer powerhouse.
Colleyville Heritage defeats Amarillo, advances to state semifinal
For the second straight season, Colleyville Heritage girls soccer (15-2-1) is heading to the state tournament.
The Panthers defeated Amarillo 4-2 in a Class 5A Division 1 regional final on Tuesday, April 1, 2 at Bulldog Stadium in Burkburnett.
Colleyville Heritage took a 1-0 lead with a goal from sophomore Addison Shimmick. After a lengthy lightning delay, the Panthers continued their offensive onslaught, taking a 3-0 lead.
Although Amarillo (20-1-2) got on the scoreboard twice, an insurance goal from Colleyville Heritage put the game out of reach.
In the state semifinal, Colleyville Heritage will face Midlothian or Red Oak, depending on the results. The Panthers, in 2024, lost in the state title game after making their first state appearance since the 2001 season.
Colleyville Heritage is searching for its first girls’ soccer state title since 1999, when the Panthers won a 4A championship.
