Saginaw shocks El Paso Bel Air, advances to state semifinal

Adrian Hinojosa scored the game winning goal for Saginaw in the final 20 seconds of regulation to stun El Paso Bel Air 1-0 in a Class 5A Division 2 Regional Final to make school district and program history on Tuesday, April 1 at Midland’s Astound Broadband Stadium.

This is the first time in Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD history that a boys’ soccer team is heading to a state semifinal. Saginaw (14-9-2) will face Highland Park (19-1-2) at a time and location that is to be determined. Highland Park defeated Mesquite Poteet 1-0.

Saginaw’s soccer stock has risen rapidly in recent years. In 2024, the Rough Riders won an area round game for the first time in program history. Now, Saginaw, the runner-up this season in District 5-5A, has taken another massive step.

Bel Air (21-3-2), in the regional semifinals, picked up a 3-0 win over Argyle, the District 6-5A champion.

It’s been an eventful school year for Saginaw; the Rough Rider football team made school history with a district title and a playoff win.

Bridgeport eliminates Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis

In a successful season that involved an undefeated district championship, Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis’ playoff run ended just shy of a state tournament birth.

The DHJ Eagles (23-3) were defeated 2-1 in a Class 4A Division 2 regional final by Bridgeport (15-7) on Tuesday, April 1 at Keller ISD Stadium.

Jared Contreras got the scoring started for the Bulls with a pinpoint free kick from the corner, and David Duran provided some insurance with another free kick goal.

In the second half, without having to dribble into the wind, the Eagles showed an improved offensive attack. DHJ’s Ronaldo Reyes got his team on the scoreboard, scoring from just in front of the goal on an assist from Joshua Montanez.

As the game continued, the Eagles had multiple close calls, including one off the crossbar, but failed to trim the Bulls’ lead.

The Eagles have made it to a regional playoff matchup in four consecutive seasons since a state semifinal appearance in the 2021 season. During that stretch, the Eagles have made two regional finals and have won five district titles.

Although they will lose some talent heading into the off-season, Diamond Hill-Jarvis has established itself as a perennial contender in Class 4A.

Castleberry shuts down district rival Lake Dallas

The River Oaks Castleberry boys soccer team got a big game from its back line and midfield and scored two highlight reel goals as the Lions downed district rival Lake Dallas 2-0 in a Class 4A Division 1 regional final on Tuesday, April 1 at Knight Stadium on the campus of Fort Worth Eagle Mountain High School.

Castleberry (21-1-3) will be making its furthest playoff run in school history when the Lions face Nevada Community (15-3-2) in the 4A D1 state semifinals later this week. Community downed Kilgore 2-1 on Tuesday.

“Caleb Castaneda really stood on his head tonight, there’s no doubt” said Castleberry coach Paul Smith of his goalkeeper. “He came out and was really aggressive, which was something we haven’t seen a whole lot this year.”

Smith also lauded his back line of Michael Lujan, Fernando “Chapo” Hernandez and Christian Serrato as well as defensive midfielder Gerardo Garcia for their contributions to the shut out. Lake Dallas (18-5-2) had numerous chances and corner kicks with the wind in the first half, but could never convert.

Garcia also got the Lions on the board in the 25th minute with a header that went in off of the left post. Garcia took a 36-yard free kick from Serrato, who kept it low into the wind, on the far right side of the goalkeeper’s box and headed to the far left post.

“It was amazing, perfectly placed right where I wanted it,” said Garcia of Serrato’s free kick. “I just had to focus and make sure that it went in. I’ve known my teammates my whole life; we’re like family, and to get this far is just amazing.”

Jose “Pepe” Chairez sent a cross to Eddie Zapata whose shot rebounded off the Lake Dallas keeper right to Ethan Padilla who put it home from eight yards out for the Lions to make it 2-0 in the 56th minute.

Castleberry was the champion of District 8-4A, and Lake Dallas was the runner-up. The teams tied 0-0 on Feb. 11 with Lake Dallas taking a 5-4 edge in penalty kicks. The Lions won on Mar. 4 by a score of 1-0.

“To play them three times, I knew, and I think the kids knew how tough this game was going to be,” said Smith. “They answered the challenge. There’s nothing but respect between us and Lake Dallas.”

Castleberry’s only loss on the season was to Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis by a score of 3-2, and the Lions have now pitched nine shutouts in a row.

Southlake Carroll eliminated by Jesuit

After a second-place finish in District 4-6A, the Southlake Carroll Dragons (17-4-4) secured three strong playoff victories.

Their solid season, however, came to an end in the Class 6A Division 2 regional finals with a 2-1 overtime loss to Dallas Jesuit (21-1). Carroll’s Fife Adeyemo forced overtime with the Dragons’ sole goal, but Jesuit took back the lead in the second OT period.

Southlake Carroll was searching for its first state semifinal appearance since the 2011 season, when the Dragons won a Class 5A state title.
