Boys soccer bi-district roundup: Southlake Carroll downs Mansfield, more from area
The Texas high school boys soccer bi-district round is here. See where and when Fort Worth-area teams are competing to begin their playoff runs, and check back for scores.
Southlake Carroll scores late to oust Mansfield
The Southlake Carroll and Mansfield boys soccer teams played 57 minutes of scoreless soccer, but the Dragons scored late goals to down the Tigers 3-0 in a Class 6A Division 2 bi-district match on Friday, March 21 at Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium.
Carroll (15-3-4) moves on to the area round and will face San Angelo Central (13-4-5) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25 at Abilene Christian University. Central defeated El Paso Socorro 1-0 on Thursday, March 20.
Carroll applied most of the pressure out shooting the Tigers 21-5 with a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Dragons broke the scoreless tie when John Skiermont was fouled in the box by Mansfield goalkeeper Logan Marks.
Marks was given a yellow card on the play and had to go off. Townes Hargrove puts away the penalty kick against the Tiger’s backup keeper to give Carroll a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute.
That got the Dragons going and five minutes later Logan Smejkal headed in a beautiful cross on a corner kick from Hargrove for a 2-0 lead.
“We were practicing it all week and we knew that we were going to score off of a set piece,” said Smejkal, a senior. “I just went out there and did it.”
Cole Swett put in the dagger in the 67th minute. Swett dribbled right to free himself then blasted a shot past the Marks from 20 yards out to ice the game.
Mansfield (5-7-5) just couldn’t get anything going with only two shots attempted in the second half.
“We got second rounded last year and that really left a bad taste in our mouths,” said Smejkal on Carroll’s early exit last season. “Our saying this year has been ‘one team, one goal’ and our goal is nothing other than state. We’re just gonna keep working every day towards that goal.”
Lake Dallas rolls to mercy-rule win over Southwest
The Lake Dallas boys soccer team broke open a close game at the half en route to a 9-1 mercy-rule win over Fort Worth Southwest in a Class 4A Division 1 bi-district match on Friday, March 21 at Clark Stadium.
Lake Dallas (16-4-2) advances to face the winner of the Stephenville (7-6-2)-Alvarado (10-9-2) contest in the area round next week.
Cameron Parma got the Falcons going with goals in the 10th and 29th minutes to give Lake Dallas a 2-0 lead. Southwest (13-10-2) answered in the 30th minute when Wilmer Varela found the back of the net to cut the lead to 2-1.
That’s where the game remained the rest of the first half, but Lake Dallas exploded after the intermission. The Falcons scored five goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half.
Carlos Larin got things rolling with a goal in the 44th minute and Mitchell White followed with a score 20 seconds later. White added a second goal in the 46th minute to push the lead to 5-1.
Adrian Anaya ended the game with goals in the 61st and 63rd minute to end the game as the Falcons led by eight goals with 20 minutes or less remaining.
Burleson Centennial advances with shoot-out win over Paschal
The Burleson Centennial and Fort Worth Paschal boys soccer teams were unable to score a single goal in 80 minutes of regular time and 20 minutes of overtime. The Spartans, however, ruled the shoot out as Centennial scored four times to Paschal’s one to advance.
Centennial (12-7-3) will now take on North Richland Hills Richland (8-8-1) in the area round early next week. Richland edged Aledo 1-0 on Thursday, March 20.
After the scoreless regular time and overtime Centennial got penalty kick goals from Steven Trujillo, Ezekiel Schwartz, Aiden Sandoval and Aaron Alvarado. Only Paschal’s Erick Moreno was able to find the back of the net for the Panthers.
