Girls soccer bi-district roundup: Southlake Carroll, Joshua advance, more from area
The Texas high school girls soccer bi-district round is here. See where and when Fort Worth-area teams are competing to begin their playoff runs, and check back for scores.
Southlake Carroll drubs Mansfield Legacy
Southlake Carroll got down a goal in the second minute, but the Dragons turned it on after that to secure a 10-1 win over Mansfield Legacy in a shortened Class 6A Division 2 bi-district match on Friday, March 21 at Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium.
Carroll (20-1-2) advances to the area round and will meet Wolfforth Frenship (17-3-0) early next week. Frenship thumped El Paso Montwood 7-0 on Thursday, March 20.
Carroll is hoping to overcome the heartbreak of the past two seasons when the Dragons lost in the late rounds to Flower Mound Marcus in 2023 and Prosper in 2024. Both teams went on to win state titles.
“I don’t know if they’re on a mission, but they are really focused,” said Carroll coach Matt Colvin who won a state title in 2022 as well as 2019 and 2008 with the Dragons. “Every team tries to leave a legacy and the best legacy you can leave is a state championship. That’s kind of the driving force for them to get it done.
“We’re blessed in Southlake to have great talent in all of our sports. I think that every year we have enough talent to win it all.”
Legacy (8-8-3) got an early goal by Ayalla Sanogo who punched in a loose ball in front of the net to take a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute, but that just seemed to tick off Carroll. The Dragons scored three times in the next three minutes.
Kamdyn Fuller, a TCU signee, got things started for the Dragons in the 3rd minute with a goal off a corner kick by Peyton Hayes that bounced around in front before Fuller punched it in. Fuller headed in another in the fourth minute off a free kick a minute later to make it 2-1.
Peyton Hayes made it 3-1 in the 5th minute when she took a nice cross from Caroline Holcombe and snuck it just inside the left post. The Dragons had another flurry of goals starting in the 12th minute.
Maura Hayes punched in a rebound off a corner kick by Audrey Anderson to make it 4-1. Fuller scored twice more in the 14th and 18th minutes sandwiched around a goal from Lexi Khan who made an incredible shot off a difficult angle from the far right side.
“I contribute, but it really is a team effort,” said Fuller who directs traffic a lot on the field. “Everyone has their role, everyone has their assists and everyone has their goals.”
Peyton Hayes made it 8-1 in the 39th minute off a rebounded shot from Caroline Smith and Anderson scored twice in the second half in the 50th and 53rd minutes. The game was halted at the 60-minute mark due to the mercy rule of an eight-plus goal lead at that point.
“The past two seasons are definitely not what we wished for, but I definitely think that it’s helped us grow as a team,” said Fuller, who was in eighth grade the last time the Dragons won state. “Our chemistry together and just how we work for each other. I think we have a bigger want and fight for state this year and hopefully we’ll get it.”
Joshua bounces Trimble Tech with big second half
The Joshua girls soccer team scored a goal early then exploded for five goals in a 16-minute span in the second half to pull away from Fort Worth Trimble Tech 7-1 in a Class 5A Division 2 bi-district match on Friday, March 21 at Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium.
Joshua (16-3-1) moves on to the area round to face Argyle (16-2-1) early next week. Argyle trounced Fort Worth Chisholm Trail 8-0.
Lauren Ellis punched in a loose ball in front of the net in the 2nd minute to give the Owls a 1-0 lead and that held up for the entire first half. Joshua came out with a vengeance after the break.
Cori Hunnel got things started punching it in from three yards out off a nice cross from Kynli Miller. Hazel Curs followed a minute later with a goal from five yards out to make it 3-0.
“I didn’t really tell them anything substantive at halftime other than we just needed to play better and they did,” said Joshua coach Jeff Brooks. “Trimble Tech played really, really well in the first half and fought super hard, so credit to them.”
Chloe Griswell scored twice, both in the 55th minute, to put the Owls up 5-0. Griswell headed in a rebound from a corner kick by Miller then punched in another from eight yards out.
Curs scored again on a blast from 33 yards out in the 56th minute to make it 6-0.
“Credit to the girls,” said Brooks. “The girls took it upon themselves to come out and get it done and they did just that.”
Trimble Tech (10-12-0) got on the board in the 67th minute when freshman Adamariz Montiel scored on a 34-yard free kick from the left hash marks that found the top right corner of the net, into a gusty wind.
Hannah Day capped the scoring for Joshua with a penalty kick in the 79th minute after a foul was called in the box.
Lake Dallas gets by Eastern Hills with shot barrage
The Lake Dallas girls soccer team out shot Fort Worth Eastern Hills 40-4 in its Class 4A Division 1 bi-district game on Friday, March 21 at Clark Stadium. Despite the disparity in shots, Eastern Hills held on, but finally succumbed to Lake Dallas 4-1.
Lake Dallas (15-6-2) moves on and will face undefeated Waxahachie Life (24-0-0) in the area round next week. Life defeated Brownwood 4-1 on Thursday, March 20.
Eastern Hills goalkeeper Sincere Williams was pelted for much of the game, stopping 20 of the 24 shots on goal. Two of the Lake Dallas goals came on rebounds.
Amelia Cox opened the scoring for the Falcons, punching in a loose ball in front of the net in the 21st minute for a 1-0 lead. The Falcons made it 2-0 when Kasey Mack put another rebound home in the 32nd minute.
But Eastern Hills (8-7-2) came right back when Mariangel Blanco Reyes scored in the 39th minute for the Highlanders off a rebound from a corner kick. Cox scored again right before halftime on a nice cross from Elizabeth Quiroz.
The Highlanders struggled against the wind in the second half and only made it past midfield a handful of times. But Williams kept battling only allowing a single goal to Cox in the final minute of the game.
Cleburne edges Paschal to advance
The Cleburne girls soccer team got a pair of first-half goals and made them stand up as the Yellow Jackets held off Fort Worth Paschal 2-1 in a Class 5A Division 1 bi-district game on Friday, March 21 at Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium.
Cleburne (13-5-2) moves on to face North Richland Hills Birdville (16-5-0) in the area round early next week. Birdville downed Aledo 2-1 in a shootout on Thursday, March 20.
Cleburne applied most of the pressure early and got on the board in the 4th minute when Arrisa Turner launched a 35-yard blast from straight on that just got over the reach of the Paschal keeper. The Jackets added to the lead in the 38th minute when Zyri Ellison took a nice, 15-yard feed from Kayla Abbott before beating the goal keeper one on one from 12 yards out.
But Paschal (15-4-1) answered right back 30 seconds later. Jameson Osbakken took a nice cross and punched it to cut the Cleburne lead to 2-1 just before the break.
The Panthers applied more pressure in the second half, but couldn’t break through. Abby Rich had the best chance to tie the game in the 64th minute, but her blast was stopped by the Cleburne keeper.
Springtown downs Southwest to reach area round
The Springtown girls soccer team got two second-half goals from Kylie Wiens to pull away for a 4-1 win over Fort Worth Southwest in a Class 4A Division 1 bi-district match on Friday, March 21 at Farrington Field.
Springtown (13-5-5) moves on to the area round where the Porcupines will face the Stephenville (9-5-1)-Kennedale (14-5-0) winner early next week.
Taylor Glover opened the scoring for Springtown and Skilei Thomas added another goal in the 16th minute to give the Porcupines a 2-0 lead. Southwest (12-10-0) answered with a tally from Siyara Isaac in the 25th minute to go into halftime down 2-1.
Wiens gave Springtown a cushion with a goal in the 56th minute and put the game away in the 78th minute.
