Top 5 high school football games to watch in Week 9 around the Fort Worth area
Looking for a good high school football game to watch in Week 9, but don’t want to travel far.
We have the top games in the Fort Worth area right here:
Waxahachie (5-2) vs. Mansfield (6-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Newsom Stadium, Mansfield
After starting 4-0, the Waxahachie Indians have dropped two of their last three. Luckily, they’re coming off a 31-21 victory over Mansfield Legacy in Week 8.
The Indians still come in averaging more than 35 points a game and holding teams under 20.
Mansfield dropped its first game of the season, a 38-3 defeat against Duncanville. Before that, the Tigers had allowed 100 points in six games (16 points per game).
Whoever wins will be in prime position to finish third in District 11-6A. If Mansfield wins and finishes third behind Duncanville and DeSoto, the Tigers will be No. 1 in D2 and host a playoff game.
I think Mansfield bounces back, give me the Tigers 34-28.
Weatherford (5-2) at Boswell (6-1)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The Boswell Pioneers lost its first game to North Crowley in Week 7, but rebounded for a 20-13 win over LD Bell. They’re 3-1 in District 3-6A, tied for second behind 4-0 North Crowley.
Boswell is averaging nearly 40 points per game while the defense has allowed just under 17.
North Crowley defeated Weatherford last week, dropping the Kangaroos to a three-way tie for third in district at 2-2 alongside Bell and Euless Trinity. In two district wins, the team has scored 40-plus, so Weatherford is capable of scoring.
Among the top six teams in district, Weatherford and Boswell have the fourth and fifth-smallest enrollment, so a likely spot in the D2 playoffs should come both their ways.
Boswell wins, give me the Pioneers 31-27.
South Grand Prairie (3-5) vs. Arlington Bowie (4-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Wilemon Field, Arlington
Following an 0-5 start to the season, the SGP Warriors have won their last three while holding a 3-1 record in District 8-6A. That’s good for second in the standings, behind 3-0 Arlington Martin.
SGP is coming off a 44-30 win over Arlington.
The Warriors have outscored their last three opponents 151-47.
A loss to Arlington in Week 7 dropped Bowie to 2-1 in district as the Volunteers are in a three-way tie for third place. If both make the playoffs, SGP will go to D1. Bowie will go to D2.
I think SGP wins a shootout, 45-38.
West (6-1) at Grandview (6-1)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The West Trojans and Grandview Zebras face off in the de facto district championship in 7-3A D1. Both enter with identical 5-0 district records and 6-1 overall.
Grandview has allowed 21 points in five district games with three shutouts while the Zebras are averaging over 50 points per game in seven games overall.
By comparison, West has given up 34 points in district, but have posted shutouts in back-to-back games, including a whopping 89-0 win over Maypearl in Week 8.
Last year, West won the match up 28-20.
But Grandview avenges the loss, give me the Zebras 35-31.
Lake Belton (7-1) vs. Midlothian (7-0)
7 p.m. Friday, Midlothian ISD Stadium
Another game that could mean the district title in 4-5A D1 features the Midlothian Panthers and Lake Belton Broncos. Midlo had a bye last week, but the Panthers are still one of nine unbeatens in the Fort Worth-area.
It’s Midlothian’s best start since 1984, when the team went 12-1.
The Panthers are allowing just over 10 points per game in district.
In their last four, they’ve scored 66, 57, 43 and 56 points.
Lake Belton has yet to have a week off, but the Broncos continue to roll. Their only loss came by one point against Shoemaker in district. But they’ve won four straight, including 69-14 last week against Granbury.
Overall in eight games, Lake Belton is nearly averaging 50 points per game.
But Midlothian will be playing for more than just a win. The Panthers lost assistant coach Clif White to cancer on Saturday so expect a lot from the team, community and MISD Stadium.
Give me the Panthers in an emotional win 42-35.
Honorable Mention: Two other great games to watch this week are Aledo (6-2) and Denton Ryan (4-2), and Brock 3-4) and Paradise (8-0). Both games are in Denton and Paradise, just outside the Fort Worth-area.
Aledo rolled past Burleson Centennial 64-21 as Hauss Hejny accounted for over 400 yards and six touchdowns. The Bearcats haven’t lost a district game since 2007 as the streak is put on the line against the Raiders. The two teams will play 7 p.m. Friday at Collins Complex. Give me Aledo 42-28.
Brock has won three straight games after edging out Whitesboro 39-35. The Eagles are averaging 48 points during this stretch and get their second undefeated team in a row with the Panthers, who have outscored opponents by more than 240 points. Still give me Brock, 35-28. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
