Game of the night

Keller d. Byron Nelson, 25-16, 25-15, 19-25, 22-25, 15-12

The Indians, No. 7 in the Class 6A area rankings, blew a 2-0 lead, but did finish strong to take down No. 1 Byron Nelson in five on the road during a District 4-6A showdown on Tuesday night.

Byron coach Brianne Groth and Keller coach Danielle Barker are sisters. This is the first year at Keller for Barker, who was previously at Flower Mound Marcus.

After Byron (28-3, 2-2) forced a fifth set, the final game was tightly contested with four ties early on, but Anna Flores got a solo block to give Keller (17-11, 2-2) a 5-4 lead that the Indians would never give up.

Reagan Sharp added a kill to make it 6-4 and the two teams continued to trade points while Byron couldn’t even it or take the lead. A Byron error and block from USC commit Leah Ford, a Top 25 player, gave Keller a 11-8 lead forcing Groth to call a timeout.

Another error gave the Indians a four-point edge, but then Keller would have back-to-back errors to make it 13-11. Barker called a timeout at 13-11 before her team closed it out.

Sharp had a game-high 17 kills while Ford finished with 10 kills on 0.316 hitting, three aces and seven total blocks. Ford is in her second game back after missing a little more than a month with an ab injury. She was an all-area middle last season and one of the top blockers in the metroplex.

Miami commit Taylor Polivka had 22 assists and Addy Franz chipped in a double double with 13 assists and 14 digs. Kea Whillock finished with 11 digs and Brooklyn Harter had nine kills.

Both the first and second set played out the same way with the teams going neck and neck. Byron would have leads in both sets, 14-12 in the first and 13-10 in the second, but Keller would finish strong with runs of 13-2 and 15-2 to end and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Byron wouldn’t go away in three as the Bobcats led 6-0 in the third and 8-2 following a kill from Boston College commit Samantha Hoppes, who hit her 1,000th career kill on Tuesday.

Keller got a kill from Sharp and the Indians led 12-11, but the Bobcats scored the next five points for a 16-12 lead. After it was 16-15, Byron got a block from Morgan Inemer for a 19-15 edge and the Bobcats would close the third with a nine of the last 13 points.

Byron trailed 9-6 in the fourth, but kills from Hoppes and Sydnee Peterson gave the Bobcats a 17-12 lead. A massive kill from Peterson and point by Hadley Warden pushed the Bobcats to a 22-18 edge before closing the fourth out and forcing a fifth.

Hoppes and Peterson led Byron with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Inemer had four blocks while Campbell Love, Peterson and Kylie Kleckner had double digits in digs (33, 18, 11).

Anna Koster chipped in 25 assists and Keatyn Rodgers added 10.

Granbury d. Wichita Falls Rider, 18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 17-15

After opening the game losing the first set, Granbury rallied back to take a 2-1 lead. The Pirates would edge out the Raiders in the fifth as the two teams combined for 32 points.
