Byron Nelson continues offensive surge and more from the Fort Worth-area in Week 4
Byron Nelson 55, Fossil Ridge 15
The torrid start for Byron Nelson’s Jake Wilson continued on Thursday night in a 55-15 win over Fossil Ridge.
Wilson, the area’s leading passer heading into Week 4, threw for 401 yards and four touchdowns as the Bobcats (4-0, 1-0 in District 4-6A) turned a tight game after the first quarter into a blowout by halftime.
Byron Nelson led 7-6 after the first 12 minutes and then outscored the Panthers (2-2, 0-1) 27-3 to lead 34-9 at the half. Wilson threw three of his touchdown passes in the frame and pushed his season touchdown total to 14.
Gavin McCurley hauled in six passes for 193 yards and a score with 3-star Rice commit Landon Ransom-Goelz getting five catches for 113 yards and another score.
Cooper Leonard paced the Panthers offense with five catches for 115 yards and hauled in both TD passes.
Midlothian 66, Waco 0
It was total dominance on Thursday night for Midlothian in a 66-0 win over Waco in 4-5A D1 action. The Panthers erupted for 35 points in the second quarter to turn a 10-0 game into a 45-0 game by halftime thanks in large part to a defense that held Waco to 20 total yards for the entire game and forced two takeaways.
Bryan Wesco had six catches for 115 yards and three scores to lead the Midlothian (4-0, 2-0) offense. The Panthers used a running-back-by-committee approach, too, getting six players to pile up 266 yards on the ground and five touchdowns.
Midlothian’s defense held the Lions to just 22 yards passing on seven completions and a team total of minus-2 yards rushing on 27 carries.
Carroll 51, Timber Creek 0
In the 4-6A district opener for both teams, Carroll dominated both sides of the ball in a 51-0 win over Timber Creek on Friday night.
Three-star Wyoming commit Kaden Anderson was sharp in his half of play, completing 11 of his 14 passes attempts for 149 yards and two touchdowns while star running back Owen Allen carried the ball just five times for 80 yards and produced three scores.
The game was never close as Carroll (4-0, 1-0) jumped out to a 23-0 first quarter lead after scoring on its opening drive and then getting a safety on Timber Creek’s (1-3, 0-1) first drive.
The Dragons added to their large lead in the second with 21 more points as the starters sat the second half with a comfortable 44-0 lead at the break.
Midlothian Heritage 33, Burleson 6
A big second quarter turned a scoreless game into a blowout and 33-6 win for Midlothian Heritage over Burleson in the team’s 5-5A Division 2 opener.
The teams played to a scoreless tie after the first quarter, but a Kaden Brown (South Dakota State commit) pass to T.J. Pride from 19 yards out broke the scoreless tie early in the second quarter.
The Jaguars (3-1, 1-0) added two more scores thanks to Brown to lead 20-0 at the half. Brown finished with 263 yards passing and four touchdown passes as well as 57 yards on the ground to lead Heritage.
Pride hauled in seven catches for 113 yards and a score.
Jabari Smith was one of the few bright spots for Burleson (0-4, 0-1), rushing for 110 yards on 21 carries.
Granbury 29, Cleburne 26
Granbury kept its record flawless with a 29-26 comeback home win over Cleburne. The Pirates (4-0, 2-0 in District 4-5A Division 2) trailed Cleburne (0-4, 0-2) through the first three quarters before tying the game at 20 early in the fourth and taking a 27-20 lead shortly after thanks to an interception.
On Cleburne’s ensuing possession, the Yellowjackets found the end zone for a potential game-tying touchdown, but missed the point. Granbury, 4-0 for the first time since 2013, couldn’t do anything with its next possession and had to punt the ball back to Cleburne, downing the ball deep into its territory.
With about four minutes to go, the Pirates stuffed Cleburne for a safety to go up 29-26. Granbury’s defense held Cleburne in check the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Liberty Christian 50, Grapevine Faith 13
Jacob Vaughan threw five touchdown passes to lead a resurgent Argyle Liberty Christian (3-1) team to a 50-13 win over Grapevine Faith (2-2).
Vaughan, who finished 396 yards passing, connected with Brady Janusek twice and Luke Thompson, Quinton Brown and Blake Brisker once to carry the offensive attack for the Warriors.
The defense got Liberty on the board first with a safety on Faith’s first possession, and then Liberty tacked on two more scores in the first quarter to lead 15-7. By halftime, Liberty lead 29-7 and cruised toward the win.
Jacob Wagoner had six catches for 89 yards and a touchdown for Faith and John Raybuck added 13 carries for 89 yards and score.
Martin 53, Temple 18
In its final non district tune-up, Arlington Martin was simply too much for Temple in a 53-18 win on the road. In a bounce back game from its first loss of the year a week ago, Martin (3-1) put up 24 points in the first quarter and never looked back in the rout.
The Warriors racked up 516 yards of offense, including 300 on the ground led by the duo of Zaire Burrow (9 carries for 107 yads and two scores) and Konye Frazier (6 carries for 98 yards and a score). Tristan Brittle completed 13 of his 21 passes for 211 yards and two scores as Martin didn’t let off the gas until the fourth quarter.
At halftime, Martin led Temple 39-11.
