Week 3 recap

Mansfield 21, South Grand Prairie 16

Mansfield was able to keep its perfect record intact with a 21-16 win over South Grand Prairie in a defensive battle.

Sergio Kennedy led the Mansfield offense with 202 yards passing, two touchdown throws and 33 yards rushing.

South Grand Prairie (0-3) took the game’s first lead midway through the first quarter before Mansfield responded with a score of its own late in the frame.

Kennedy then connected with Jacobe Hayes for a 27-yard score with 1:59 left in the half following a missed field goal by the Warriors.

The Warriors closed out the half with a field goal to cut the deficit down to 14-10 and took the lead on the first possession following intermission on a 63-yard pass from Jaden Stanley to Julian Stratford.

SGP had the chance to extend the lead, but fumbled, which set up the final go-ahead score for the Tigers. With 1:55 left in the third, James Johnson, who finished with 163 yards on the ground, scored from 29 yards out to put Mansfield up 21-16.

In the fourth, the Mansfield defense buckled down and didn’t allow the other much of anything to SGP, forcing a punt and a turnover on downs to preserve the win.

The Tigers start 3-0 for the first time since 2011 when they won their first seven games and finished 11-2.

Boswell 49, Haltom 23

Boswell jumped out to a 28-0 lead over Haltom and never looked back in a 49-23 win on Thursday night. Sawyer Farr, who had 388 yards passing and five touchdowns in Week 2 against Mansfield Lake Ridge, passed for 245 yards and four scores while Ezra Carter had 174 yards on the ground and two scores in the win.

Gage Ellis was Farr’s go-to target early as he accounted for the two first quarter scores. Ellis finished with six catches for 141 yards and three scores.

Haltom (0-3) found some rhythm late in the second and third quarters, scoring 16 straight, but Boswell (3-0) rattled off 21 straight points in the fourth to pull away for good.

The Pioneers, who start 3-0 for the first time in five years, put up 537 yards compared to Haltom’s 370, and that’s with losing the turnover battle 3-0.

Southlake Carroll 47, Cedar Hill 6

Carroll found little resistance in a 47-6 drubbing over Cedar Hill on Friday night. 3-star Wyoming commit Kaden Anderson had an efficient night throwing the ball, completing nine of his 13 attempts for 116 yards and thee scores and Owen Allen rushed for 109 yards and a score.

Anderson is No. 13 in the Star-Telegram Top 100 while Allen is No. 3.

Anderson had two first half touchdown throws that fueled Carroll’s 26-0 halftime lead. He added another midway though the third as part of Carroll’s 40-0 run to start the game.

Carroll’s defense held Cedar Hill (0-3) to just 215 yards of offense, including holding the Longhorns to 11 completions for 90 yards. The Dragons are 3-0.

Hebron 54, Eaton 40

A back-and-forth game early on saw Hebron grab the lead late in the third quarter and extend it to 17 points in the fourth on the way to a 54-40 win over Eaton.

Bryson Spriggs tallied 152 yards on 30 carries with one score to help lead Hebron (2-1) along with Braxton Baker’s 127 yards passing and three total touchdowns.

The Hawks got out to a 14-0 lead until Eaton (1-2) rattled off 20 straight points in the second quarter before Baker threw one of his touchdown passes with less than a minute left in the half to make it 23-20 for Hebron.

Midway through the third, the Eagles got a touchdown run from Ja’Mari Harris to give Eaton the 27-23 lead, but Hebron grabbed the lead for good, though, on a PJ Crayton touchdown pass to JJ Hatcher with 1:33 left in the third.

The Hawks scored two more times to go up 44-27 with 9:36 left in the fourth and put the game out of reach.

Eaton closed the gap to 44-34 and 51-40, but Hebron would respond with scores of its own to keep Eaton at arm’s length away.

Arlington Lamar 27, Keller Central 9

A 45-yard fumble recovery in the second quarter proved to be the difference maker for Arlington Lamar in a 27-9 win over Keller Central.

With less than a minute to play in the first half, Jayden Pederson scooped up a fumble and scored to put Lamar (1-2) up 15-7 at the half. Central (0-3) forced a safety midway through the third, but could not capitalize on the points-plus-possession.

Lamar found the end zone two more times in the fourth to put the game away for good. The Vikings limited the Central offense to just 213 yards. Gannon Carey paced the Vikings’ offense with 123 yards passing on 11-of-15 and added six carries, 38 yards and a score on the ground.

Burleson Centennial 65, Saginaw 0

Burleson Centennial opened District 3-5A Division 1 play with a resounding 65-0 win over Saginaw.
