Mansfield Timberview girls take home state runner-up trophy at UIL track and field meet

The Mansfield Timberview girls track team finished with the UIL Class 5A state runner-up trophy Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

It is the first time the program has reached the podium at state since winning the team title in 2009.

The Wolves only had six girls competing and finished with 61 points. Fort Bend Marshall won the championship with 75 points.

“It’s been talked about for a few years,” Timberview coach Bekah Morrison said. “We had an injury last year and that kind of cut it short, so these girls have been on a mission all year. As the season went on, they started to see their potential. Just a tough group of girls, and they’ve worked really hard to get here.”

Timberview scored in eight events, which included winning the 4x100 relay in a time of 45.97.

The relay team consisted of Princess Miller, Adriane Nwonumah, Norah Nwonumah and Lola Mabon. In that race, Timberview beat Marshall and Lancaster.

Also hitting the podium for Timberview on Friday, junior Taylor Fingers won the silver medal in the 5A long jump final, finishing with a mark of 19-6.25.

It was Fingers’ first trip to state and first medal.

“I’m excited and super proud of myself,” Fingers said. “It’s kind of nerve racking, but once you get into it, you just have to focus and do what you know how to do.”

She finished in fourth place in the triple jump final. Fingers also stars on the girls soccer team.

Senior Glennis Woolridge won the bronze medal, a third place finish in the shot put. It was also her first state medal. Woolridge competed in the discus final and finished in fifth.

“It was good. I’m just proud of myself for competing,” said Woolridge, who will continue her career at Lamar. “My improvement from last year was really good.”

Woolridge also starred on the softball team and was the leading home run hitter.

Timberview also got third in the 4x200 relay.

“It surprised people,” Morrison said. “No one knew. We were flying under the radar all year. It’s incredible.”
