UIL state track notes: Colleyville thrower wins discus gold, Timberview wins 4x100 relay
Colleyville Heritage senior Lucas Williams needed just one more good throw to try and place in the UIL Class 5A state discus final on Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
He put everything on the line and threw a 191-2 to capture the state championship.
“It feels pretty good to be honest,” Williams said. “I wasn’t expecting it going in. I just wanted to do well.”
Williams didn’t let a last place finish (ninth) in the shot put earlier in the day bring him down.
“I just had to put all that behind me,” he said. “Getting last place in shot, that hurt but it wasn’t the end of the world. I still had one more event. I just had to get my mind right.”
Williams had only thrown a 178 and had two fouls before his sixth and final attempt, and was chased by throwers from Ennis and Cedar Park.
“I was just trying to get on the podium at that point,” he said. “I just went for it and got 191. I thought that’s a good throw. I have a chance.”
Williams was the only state qualifier from Colleyville Heritage and one of two from Grapevine-Colleyville ISD (Grapevine’s Walker St. John).
“It’s nice to have all the support from my family and friends behind me,” said Williams, who will continue his track career at the University of Colorado.
Timberview to the podium
The girls 4x100 relay team of Princess Miller, Adriane Nwonumah, Norah Nwonumah and Lola Mabon won the Class 5A state championship in a time of 45.97.
The Wolves beat Fort Bend Marshall and Lancaster.
Also hitting the podium for Timberview on Friday, junior Taylor Fingers came away with the silver medal in the 5A long jump final, finishing with a mark of 19-6.25.
It was Fingers’ first trip to state and first medal.
“I’m excited and super proud of myself,” Fingers said. “It’s kind of nerve racking, but once you get into it, you just have to focus and do what you know how to do.”
She finished in fourth place in the triple jump final.
Fingers also stars on the girls soccer team.
Senior Glennis Woolridge came away with the bronze medal, a third place finish in the shot put. It was also her first state medal.
Woolridge competed in the discus final and finished in fifth.
“It was good. I’m just proud of myself for competing,” said Woolridge, who will continue her career at Lamar. “My improvement from last year was really good.”
Woolridge also starred on the softball team and was the leading home run hitter.
Mallard for gold
Mansfield Legacy senior Christine Mallard came to the state meet last season and went home with two silver medals. Coming into Friday’s 5A 400 meter final, Mallard had one of her best runs of the season to finish as the state champion.
Mallard beat Port Neches-Groves senior Sanaria Butler with a time of 53.63.
She also got the silver medal in the 200 meter final.
Quick hits
Aledo sophomore Lauren St. Peters finished in fourth place in both the 5A shot put (44-10.25) and discus (144-0).
Mansfield Summit’s Kai Bynum just missed the podium in the 5A long jump coming in fourth (22-9.50).
Grapevine’s Walker St. John came in fourth in the 800 meter run (1:56.28). He won the 3200 final on Friday to wrap up his career. He won the 1600 race last season.
Mansfield Timberview’s Adriane Nwonumah just came up short in the girls 5A 100 meter dash (11.79). The Wolves did get a bronze medal in the girls 4x200 relay.
The Tolar boys finished in fourth in the 2A 4x200 relay and seventh in the 4x400.
The Saginaw boys finished in fourth in the 5A 4x400 (3:20.99).
