Softball/Baseball Recap (4/13): Colleyville ties for first place, Burleson ace Ks 17 in no-hitter
Softball
Colleyville Heritage 8, Justin Northwest 2
McKinley Swaim allowed five hits and struck out seven to go over 100 strikeouts on the season as the Panthers bested the Texans in District 6-5A on Wednesday.
The win pulled Heritage into a tie with Northwest for first place in district play. The Panthers (21-3, 10-1) win their sixth straight game. The Texans (20-6, 10-1) snapped their 14-game winning streak.
DeNae Vasquez Dickson led the game off with a double to center and scored on a two-out double from Graci Green. Heritage added three in the second highlighted by Nia Sisneros’ lead off homer to center. Vasquez Dickson drove in a run with a single to right and she scored on a Northwest error.
Leah Perales drove in another run to make it 5-0.
Sophia Shannon and Vasquez Dickson picked up RBI singles in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-1.
Vasquez Dickson went 4 for 5 with two RBI and two runs.
Keller 8, Timber Creek 7 (9)
Mya Gonzales’ RBI sac fly to center scored Ashley Breeding and the Indians won with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth to win the District 4-6A matchup.
Keller (16-10, 9-1) wins its eighth straight district game.
Timber Creek drops to 12-13 overall and 6-3 in district.
Keller took a two-run lead in the top of the seventh with a two-out two-run double from Gonzales to left. But the Falcons tied it in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double to right from Isabella Bojkovic.
Gonzales finished with three RBI while Kaiya Fabela went 3 for 4 with two RBI. Marissa Espinoza got two hits and drove in a run.
Bojkovic led Timber Creek with four RBI and three hits. Saniya Hill homered and had three RBI.
Brewer 3, Granbury 1
Karlie Landrum went over 100 strikeouts this season with six in seven innings during the Bears’ District 5-5A win over the Pirates. Landrum allowed three hits.
Lillian Williams drove in Brenna Haynes in the bottom of the third for Granbury that tied the game at 1-1.
Allie Dafoe struck out 10 batters in seven innings for the Pirates (9-11-2, 3-5).
Landrum, Kelsey Valo and Hannah Caldwell all had a pair of hits for the Bears (13-6-2, 6-2).
Landrum singled in a run in the first inning while Valo had an RBI single in the sixth.
Baseball
Burleson 5, Mansfield Summit 0
Kyndall Cassidy threw a no-hitter while striking out 17 batters in seven innings in the Elks’ District 8-5A win over the Jaguars on Wednesday.
Cassidy needed 99 pitches with 68 going for strikes.
He also added a triple and RBI.
It was Burleson’s only RBI on the night as Summit committed four errors.
Cassidy was a walk and error away from a perfect game, but did manage to face the 21 batter minimum.
Cassidy struck out the side in the second, third and fourth innings. He also struck out two batters in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Burleson improved to 8-1 in district, tied for first place. After starting the season 1-10, the Elks have gone 8-2.
Southlake Carroll 8, Eaton 1
Tyson Drake belted a grand slam to spark a five-run top of the seventh to help the Dragons pull away from the Eagles in District 4-6A.
Carroll improved to 19-8 and 5-2. Eaton dropped to 16-6 and 6-3.
Drake hit a 2-2 pitch to deep right field with two outs. Clark Springs also drove in a run during the seventh.
Nick Jones went 3 for 4 with a double and home run for Carroll. Owen Proksch got the win for the Dragons allowing four hits with 10 strikeouts.
LD Bell 2, FW Paschal 0
Matthew Wendorf threw a one-hit shutout and struck out six batters in Bell’s District 3-6A win over the Panthers.
Devon Cook and Josh Ortiz drove in runs for the Blue Raiders, who improved to 12-7-3 overall and 6-3 in district.
Arlington Grace Prep 6, Dallas Shelton 0
Walker Shaw struck out 11 batters in six innings and Brendan Chambers led all hitters with two hits and two RBI in the Lions’ district win over Shelton. Grace Prep improved to 5-2 in district play.
