Decatur set on football coach, AD as school district chooses College Station’s Huff
Decatur ISD named College Station’s Steve Huff as its next head football coach and athletic director during a special school board meeting on Thursday.
Huff led College Station to the Class 5A Division 1 state championship game in December, however, the Cougars lost to Katy Paetow, 27-24 in overtime. Huff posted an 88-19 record in eight seasons with College Station, which included the 5A D2 state title in 2017 when the Cougars defeated Aledo, 20-19.
The hiring ends a one-year process for Decatur ISD.
The school district voted last summer to a resignation agreement with former football coach and athletic director Mike Fuller after an eight-hour meeting. Last March, the board of trustees voted unanimously to renew Fuller’s contract, but in June, Fuller’s employment status was discussed at a special board meeting.
Decatur ISD wasn’t on the same page as school board president Thomas Houchin and former superintendent Joseph Coburn were at odds on choosing a meeting date to find a new head coach.
In documents obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram through open records requests, text messages and emails between Houchin and Coburn showed increasing tension and differing opinions on holding a school board meeting to discuss Fuller’s employment status.
Coburn was voted out in August.
Decatur appointed offensive coordinator Ty Lang to interim head football coach and athletic director in June, about a week after the board’s decision on Fuller. The Eagles went 4-7 last season.
Huff will take over an athletic program that has won several state titles in multiple sports under Fuller. The volleyball program has won state in 2018, 2020 and 2021, and the boys cross country team won a championship in 2019.
