Holiday hoops recap (12/29): Whataburger, Mansfield ISD and more from Fort Worth area
Boys
Mansfield Timberview 76, McKinney 59
For the second straight day, the Timberview Wolves showed off their dominance at the Whataburger tournament, this time beating 6A No. 3 McKinney in convincing fashion during the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Timberview, No. 3 in 5A, will play Duncanville in the championship semis at 8 p.m. at Mansfield Legacy.
Duncanville moved to the semis after beating Arlington Martin on Wednesday.
The Wolves, who put up 90 in their first round game on Tuesday, stormed out to a 29-11 lead on the Lions after the first quarter. Six different players scored led by 14 points from Jared Washington.
Washington had 26 points on Tuesday against Richardson Pearce. Against McKinney, he had 30 points.
Timberview led 46-31 at halftime.
Donovan O’Day hit 11 field goals and finished with 24 points for the Wolves.
Duncanville 61, Arlington Martin 55
In a showdown of two top 15 Class 6A teams in the state, No. 13 Martin nearly pulled off the upset over the No. 1 Panthers in the quarterfinals of the Whataburger tournament.
Duncanville will play Timberview with the winner clinching a spot in the title game on Thursday.
The Panthers controlled most of the first half and after falling behind 4-0, they went on an 8-0 run and led all the way up to halftime. Duncanville owned a 15-9 lead after the first quarter and 36-29 lead at intermission.
But Martin came out on fire in the third quarter and limited Duncanville on offense. The Warriors got four points from Cody Stevens to pull within five in the third before Aric Demings hit a three to push the Panthers ahead 39-31.
The Warriors followed with the next nine points to grab a 40-39 lead highlighted by a three from Andre Norris and a drive to the basket from Kordelius Jefferson.
The Panthers countered with a 10-2 run to lead 49-42 after three. Demings hit back-to-back threes. He scored 17 points. Ron Holland also scored 17 for Duncanville.
Martin pulled within five points three different times in the fourth quarter, but no closer as Duncanville held off to advance. Norris led the team with 16 points while Stevens and Jefferson added 14 apiece.
Birdville 82, Richardson Pearce 46
The Hawks used a 19-0 first-quarter run to blow by the Mustangs in the Whataburger consolation quarterfinals on Wednesday. Birdville will play again at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at Mansfield Legacy.
After going down 3-0, Daniel Sykes and Gehrig Normand hit back-to-back threes for Birdville and Myles Amason flushed home a dunk for 12 straight points that led to a Pearce timeout.
Sykes, who finished with 20 points, made consecutive threes to push the lead to 17 points in the second.
The Hawks led 44-26 at halftime.
Chase Henderson chipped in 18 points for the Hawks. Normand added 11.
Grapevine 62, Nacogdoches 61
The Mustangs used a 17-6 fourth-quarter spurt to edge out Nacogdoches on Wednesday in the MT Rice tourney in Waco.
Grapevine (14-6) made all eight free throw attempts in the final period. Terrance Ramirez scored six points in the quarter and finished with a team-high 20 points.
Grapevine made 11 3-pointers, but a third quarter lull had the Mustangs down 55-45 after three.
Connor Maxwell made three 3-pointers for Grapevine and finished with 13 points.
North Crowley 57, St. Mark’s 44
The North Crowley Panthers pulled away from the Lions in the third quarter to pick up the win in the Whataburger consolation quarterfinals on Wednesday.
North Crowley, which came into the tourney as the No. 1 Fort Worth area 6A team, will play Birdville in the consolation semis at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Mansfield Legacy HS
The Panthers only led the Lions 25-24 at halftime, but came out in the third quarter and hit four 3-pointers, two each from Trey Davis and CJ Williams. They outscored the Lions 20-11 in the period to grab a 10-point lead.
Trey Davis hit four threes and scored 12 points. Williams also had 12.
KD Davis and Gerrick Brown added eight apiece for the Panthers.
Byron Nelson 52, Marcus 45
Finley Bizjack was named tournament MVP after scoring 27 points as the Bobcats beat the Marauders in the championship game of the Byron Nelson Classic on Wednesday.
The game was even with the Bobcats and Marauders all squared at 11-11 after the first quarter and 24-24 during intermission. But the Byron was able to pull away in the third with 16 points while the defense held Marcus to 10.
Conner Lindsey added 12 for Byron and Jakob Zenon chipped in nine.
Lindsey and Zenon were named all-tourney.
Girls
Mansfield Legacy 47, Plano East 45
Mansfield Legacy guard Sirviva Legions took an out of bounds pass with 10 seconds left, drove the lane, then put back her own miss as the Class 5A Broncos stunned Plano East, the No. 2 team in Class 6A, in the quarterfinals of the MISD Spring Creek Invitational.
Legacy (13-7) trailed for much of the game, but stayed close enough to strike at the end. The Broncos trailed 35-29 entering the fourth quarter.
Savannah Catalon scored eight of her game-high 17 points in the final frame, including a 3-pointer with 58 seconds left that tied the game at 45.
Plano East had a chance to take the lead back, but an offensive foul on the Lady Panthers gave the ball back to Legacy with 32 seconds left. The Broncos dribbled the clock down to 10 seconds before both teams took time outs.
Legions, who had six points in the fourth quarter, finished with 15 points for Legacy. Idara Udo led Plano East with 14 points, but did not score in the final eight minutes.
Oklahoma commit Kayla Cooper did not play for the Panthers and SMU commit Donavia Hall had nine points for East.
Frisco Memorial 45, Mansfield Timberview 36
Mansfield Timberview, No. 14 in Class 5A, went back and forth with 5A No. 6 Frisco Memorial, but the Wolves struggled to score in the final quarter as the Warriors pulled away in a quarterfinal of the Mansfield ISD Spring Creek Invitational.
The game was tied after one quarter, the Wolves had a 22-21 lead at the half and Timberview took a 30-26 after three, but the Wolves scored only six points in the final quarter, hitting only two of 12 field goal attempts.
Kamryn Wilson, who finished with seven points for Timberview (11-7), finally connected from the floor with 2:17 left in the game. University of North Texas commit Desiree Wooten, who had a team-high eight points for the Wolves, connected on a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left.
Memorial poured in 19 in the final frame with University of Nevada, Las Vegas commit Jasmyn Lott outscoring the Wolves with 10 of her game-high 18 points in the quarter.
Angel Alexander (10 points) and Jordan Conerly (9) each hit three 3-pointers in the game for the Warriors.
Little Elm Braswell 48, Mansfield Legacy 38
The slipper finally didn’t fit for Mansfield Legacy. The Broncos had defeated 5A No. 11 Pflugerville and 6A No. 2 Plano East on its way to the semifinals of the Mansfield ISD Spring Creek Invitational.
The Broncos pull even in the fourth quarter against 6A No. 12 Braswell, but LSU commit Alisa Williams took over after that to pull away.
Legacy (13-8) struggled against the Lady Bengal’s defensive quickness and height, but tied the game at 32 on a 3-pointer by Maddie Griggs with 6:26 left in the game.
But Williams, who scored eight of her game-high 15 points in the final period, helped Braswell (21-2) seal the win. The Bengals hit seven of 10 foul shots in the fourth quarter.
Legacy trailed 19-13 at the half, but Sirviva Legions poured in 12 of her team-high 14 points for the Broncos in the third quarter to pull within 30-29.
Grambling commit Jazmyne Jackson contributed 15 points for Braswell, including three 3-pointers. Savannah Catalon chipped in 11 for Legacy and Griggs finished with nine.
South Grand Prairie 53, Mansfield Timberview 42
Mansfield Timberview battled back from a seven point deficit at the half to pull within one by the end of the third quarter, but South Grand Prairie’s Adhel Tac tossed in eight of her game-high 15 points in the final period as the Warriors pulled away in a fifth-place semifinal at the Mansfield ISD Spring Creek Invitational.
Timberview (11-8), No. 14 in Class 5A, got six, third-quarter points from University of North Texas commit Desiree Wooten to pull to within 34-33. Wooten finished with 10 points.
SGP (17-4), No. 8 in 6A, outscored the Wolves 19-9 in the final eight minutes, including making seven of 10 from the free throw line.
Chrishawn Coleman led the Wolves with 12 points. Taylor Barnes chipped in 12 for the Warriors.
Arlington Bowie 60, Amarillo Tascosa 58
Arlington Bowie battled back from an early fourth quarter deficit to down Amarillo Tascosa in a consolation quarterfinal at the MISD Spring Creek Invitational.
After a back and forth first half, Bowie (10-11) tied the game at 35 on a basket by Taryn Perkins with 4:51 left in the third quarter. Blessing Teamer followed with a lay in and made foul shot to put the Volunteers up 38-35 at the 4:42 mark of the third.
But Tascosa went on a 12-1 run to finish the quarter and led 47-39 entering the fourth.
Perkins led the Vols back scoring seven of her team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter. Perkins basket with 1:58 left tied the game at 56.
The Vols hit two free throws, one by Perkins and one by Seniya Wilson, in the last 32 seconds for the win.
Teamer finished with 11 points for Bowie and Wilson chipped in 10. Tryssa Dowd paced the Lady Rebels with 21 points and Daizjia Oages had 10 for Tascosa.
Huntsville 44, Mansfield 36
Mansfield couldn’t recover from a 10-point deficit after the first quarter in a loss in the consolation quarterfinals of the Mansfield ISD Spring Creek Invitational.
Kameron Chambers helped Mansfield (10-10) draw to within 24-19 at the half scoring all eight of her points in the second quarter. Bree Williams led the Tigers with 12 points.
JaNavia Gage, a 6-3 post, helped the Hornets build their early lead with eight of her 14 points coming in the first quarter. Alyiah Craft led all scorers with 16 points for Huntsville, including six of nine from the free throw line.
Humble Atascocita 57, Mansfield Summit 52
Mansfield Summit rallied from 11 points down entering the fourth quarter, but ran out of time as Humble Atascocita held off the Jaguars in a seventh-place quarterfinal at the Mansfield ISD Spring Creek Invitational.
Jaiona Jackson and Laela Harris had five points each in the fourth quarter. Donterria Brown, who had a team-high 15 points for the Jaguars, had four points in the final frame.
Jackson finished with 11 points and Destiny Whitaker had 10 for Summit.
Bucknell commit Blake Matthews had 15 points for the Lady Eagles. Kori Fenner led all scorers pouring in 28 points for Atascocita, including three 3-pointers in the third quarter.
Marble Falls 62, Arlington Bowie 51
Lexie Edwards started the game on a personal 9-0 run for Marble Falls and Arlington Bowie never fully recovered in a consolation semifinal at the Mansfield ISD Spring Creek Invitational.
Bowie (10-12) was down 11-0 to start the game and did fight back to pull within 29-24 at the half, but never could pull even.
Edwards, a 6-3 sophomore post, had 13 points in the first quarter and 16 by halftime on her way to a team-high 20. Gia Lemon added 16 points for the Mustangs.
Alaisha Brown starred for Bowie with a game-high 24 points including making 10 of 10 from the free throw line. Taryn Perkins, Blessing Teamer, and Soleil Brown had eight points each for the Volunteers.
Bowie will play in the consolation third place game at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday against Texarkana Liberty-Eylau at Lake Ridge High school.
Peaster 63, Argyle Liberty Christian 60
Payton Hull scored 20 points to lead the Greyhounds over the Warriors in a battle of top Fort Worth-area programs during the quarterfinals of the Whataburger girls blue division on Wednesday at Saginaw HS.
Peaster will play Midlothian Heritage in the semis at 8 p.m.
Brooklyn Bosher had 11 points for Peaster and Jaycee McCloud chipped in 10.
Peaster 72, Midlothian Heritage 55
Four Greyhounds scored in double figures as Peaster advanced to the championship game of the Whataburger girls blue division, led by 33 points from Payton Hull.
Peaster will play Jim Ned in the title game at 3:30 p.m. at Saginaw HS.
Brooklyn Bosher scored 14 points, Landry Robertson added 13 and Miranda Smith chipped in 10.
