Holiday hoops recap (12/27-28): Whataburger, Mansfield ISD and more from Fort Worth area

Boys

Mansfield Timberview 90, Richardson Pearce 39

The Wolves ran away with the Whataburger Orange Tournament opener over the Mustangs on Tuesday at Mansfield Legacy High School.

Timberview broke open the game with the first 18 points of the third quarter and outscored the Mustangs in the period 24-3. The Wolves outscored Pearce 46-16 in the second half.

Timberview guard Jared Washington led all scorers with 26 points. Chendall Weaver added 23.

Leading 44-23 at the break, the Wolves stormed out to the third quarter with four or five dunks, including on three straight possessions, two by Weaver with an alley oop from Washington.

Washington also converted an alley oop from Braylon Crosby and Donovan O’Day added a dunk to push the lead to 62-23. Crosby and O’Day added 14 and 13 points for the Wolves.

Coppell 71, Mansfield Legacy 63

The Cowboys outscored the Broncos 18-10 in the final 5 1/2 minutes to come out victorious on Tuesday at the Whataburger Orange Tournament.

It was a matchup of DFW stars with Coppell’s Stanford bound forward Ryan Agarwal (32 points) and Mansfield Legacy 4-star forward Isaiah Manning (30 points).

Legacy led 53-50 after three following a trey from Manning.

Agarwal hit a layup and Naz Brown made a pair of free throws to give Coppell a 55-53 advantage. Agarwal made another basket and Noel Berhe drained a 3-pointer to up the lead to 60-53.

A 3-point play from Agarwal sealed it for the Cowboys.

Brown added 16 for Coppell.

Legacy led 16-10 in the first quarter and Brown beat the second-quarter buzzer to give Coppell a 38-36 lead at half. There were seven lead changes in the second quarter.

Mansfield Lake Ridge 71, Grapevine 68 OT

Rylan Kennedy scored a game-high 30 points as the Eagles edged out the Mustangs on Monday night at the MT Rice Tournament in Waco.

Kennedy made 12 field goals as the Eagles rallied back in the second half, outscoring Grapevine 37-31 in the third and fourth quarters to force overtime. Lake Ridge scored six points in the extra frame and held Grapevine to three points.

Caden Holmes added 19 points for Lake Ridge.

Grapevine, which led 34-28 at intermission, was led by Terrance Ramirez’s 25 points. Mitch Williams added 14.

McKinney 68, Birdville 61

Birdville cut a 17-point deficit at halftime to pull within five in the fourth quarter, but the McKinney Lions hung on during a first-round win on Tuesday at the Whataburger tournament.

The Hawks trailed 43-26 at halftime after the Lions outscored Birdville 22-9 in the second quarter.

Birdville managed to score eight in a row late in the third quarter and used an 11-2 run to get within 57-41 after three. Chase Henderson hit a couple of threes early in the fourth to make it single digits.

Gehrig Normand made it nine at the three-minute mark of the fourth and Henderson hit 1 of 2 at the free throw line before Birdville got the rebound. The ball went to Henderson who got Birdville down to five points with just under 30 seconds remaining.

Henderson had a team-high 23 points while Normand chipped in 21.

McKinney star Ja’Kobe Walter scored a game-high 29 points. Devin Vincent added 12.

Byron Nelson 79, Sherman 41

Byron Nelson 68, Prosper Rock Hill 66

Bobcat star Finley Bizjack scored 27 points against Sherman and 34 against Rock Hill to push Byron Nelson into the championship match of the Byron Nelson Classic.

The Bobcats will face Flower Mound Marcus for the title at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Brock 51, Ponder 48

Tyce Gentry hit the game-winning three-pointer with 2.8 seconds left to lift the Eagles past the Lions in the Whataburger Blue tourney on Tuesday at Chisholm Trail High School.

Brock led 15-3 after the first quarter, but Ponder came back and limited the Eagles. The Lions grabbed a 35-34 lead after three.

Arlington Martin 57, North Crowley 50

Martin erased an ugly third quarter performance to rally past North Crowley in a battle of the top two Fort Worth area Class 6A teams to close out the Whataburger Orange bracket on Day 1 Tuesday night.

The Warriors, No. 2 in the area, only scored five points and trailed No. 1 North Crowley 41-36 after three.

But Cody Stevens nailed back to back threes to get Martin within 45-44 midway through the final period and the Warriors took the lead for good on another three from Jeremiah Charles.

North Crowley tried to claw back late, but it was a free throw game from there and Martin secured the win.

Martin will face Duncanville in the next round at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Mansfield Legacy High School. Duncanville routed St. Mark’s 81-43 on Tuesday.

The Panthers led 17-16 after the first quarter, but Andre Norris hit a corner three for Martin and Kordelius Jefferson threw down a vicious dunk on a North Crowley defender that erupted the crowd.

Martin led 31-27 at intermission. North Crowley outscored Martin 14-5 in the third quarter.

Charles led all scores with 19 points. Jefferson added 11 and Stevens finished with 10.

Trey Davis led North Crowley with 16 points. KD Davis added 14.

Girls

Southlake Carroll 62, Waco 21

The Dragons opened the MT Rice Tournament at Waco Midway High School on Monday with a dominating win over Waco High.

Nine different players scored for Carroll (16-3), led by Milania Jordan’s 22 points.

Junior Camryn Tade added 16.

Carroll blitzed by Waco with a 20-2 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 34-9 at intermission.

Taryn Barnes chipped in eight points for the Dragons.

Hebron 48, Arlington Bowie 45

Alaisha Brown and Dakia Patton led Bowie with 14 and 13 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Hawks edged out the Volunteers on Tuesday in the Mansfield ISD Spring Creek Invitational.

The tournament started out with 27 teams after five dropped out citing Covid concerns. Class 6A No. 7 Pearland Shadow Creek was one of the teams to pull out as well as Houston Cypress Creek, Austin Westlake, the Mansfield Timberview JV, as well as this year’s tournament host Mansfield Lake Ridge.

Bowie (8-11) outscored Hebron 12-4 in the third quarter to grab a 34-30 lead.

But Hebron scored 18 in the fourth quarter and held the Vols to 11 helping the Hawks get the victory.

Blessing Teamer added seven points for Bowie.

Mansfield Legacy 51, Frisco Heritage 20

Savannah Catalon poured in 21 points for Legacy as the Broncos built a 25-point lead at the half then coasted to a first-round win over the Coyotes at the MISD Spring Creek Invitiational.

Catalon scored 15 points in the first half including three 3-point field goals.

Sirviva Legions added 10 for Legacy. Giovanna Castro, two threes, and Maddie Garza had six points each for Heritage.

Pflugerville 60, Mansfield 32

Avari Berry scored five of her game-high 13 points in the first quarter as Class 5A No. 11 Pflugerville raced to a 21-7 lead after one quarter on its way to a win over the Tigers in the opening round of the MISD Spring Creek Invitational.

Colorado Christian commit Aleksandra Clayton led Mansfield with nine points while Bree Williams had eight.

Aaliyah Holmes chipped in 11 points and Jaida Gomez hit three 3-pointers to add nine points for the Panthers.

Mansfield Summit 61, Arlington Martin 40

Jaiona Jackson scored 15 of her game-high 24 points in the second half as Summit pulled away from Martin after the break of their first-round game at the MISD Spring Creek Invitational.

The Jaguars led by five at the half with the help of Donterria Brown who scored 12 of her 18 points in the first two quarters for Summit.

Cadence Smith and Emily Doberry paced the Warriors with 10 and 11 points, respectively.

Summit out scored Martin 32-16 in the final two frames.

North Little Rock (AR) 76, Arlington Sam Houston 21

North Little Rock, ranked No. 3 in Class 6A in Arkansas, overwhelmed the Texans bolting out to a 24-2 first quarter on its way to a win in the first round of the MISD Spring Creek Invitational.

Destine Duckworth led the Wildcats with 20 points. Duckworth had 12 in the first quarter and had 16 at the intermission.

April Edwards added nine points and Jasirae Vick, Jocelyn Tate, Amauri Williams, and Madison Hatley all had eight points a piece for NLR.

Charity Edwards, Madison Harris, and Vivian Nwabufo each had six points for Sam Houston.

Frisco Memorial 71, Arlington Seguin 21

Frisco Memorial, the 6th ranked team in Class 5A, blitzed Seguin in the first half to lead 46-7 at the break en route to a big win in the first round of the MISD Spring Creek Invitational.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas commit Jasmyn Lott scored 10 of her 13 points in the first half for the Warriors. Brynn Lusby led Memorial with 14 points while Falyn Lott pitched in 11.

Asia Johnson led the Cougars with eight points.

Mansfield Legacy 57, Pflugerville 55

Mansfield Legacy overcame a two-point deficit entering the final quarter to advance to the quarterfinals of the MISD Spring Creek Invitational with a thriller over 5A No. 11 Pflugerville.

Legacy will face 6A No. 2 Plano East at 11 :30 a.m. on Wednesday at Mansfield Timberview High School

Maddie Griggs hit five of the Broncos seven 3 pointers to lead Legacy with 23 points. Savannah Catalon chipped in 19 points and was clutch from the line hitting 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter and 7 of 8 for the game.

Sirviva Legions added 12 points with 10 coming before halftime.

Jaida Gomez hit four of Pflugerville’s seven 3 pointers to lead the Panthers with 18 points and Aaliyah Holmes had 13.

Mansfield Timberview 67, Denton Guyer 44

Guyer hung with Class 5A No. 14 Mansfield Timberview early, but the Wolves pulled away as the game went along to advance to the quarterfinals of the MISD Spring Creek Invitational.

Timberview (11-6) will have a showdown with 5A No. 6 Frisco Memorial at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday at Mansfield Lake Ridge High School.

TaMaiya Mims led the Wolves with 14 points. University of North Texas commit Desiree Wooten, Brooklyn Terry, and Kamryn Wilson added 11 points each for Timberview.

Junior guard Raina Akbar starred for Guyer with 20 points, including four 3-pointers.

Little Elm Braswell 88, Mansfield Summit 49

Summit trailed 6A No. 12 Braswell by six points at the half, but the Lady Bengals clamped down on the Jaguars in the final two quarters to run away with a 39-point win in the second round of the Mansfield ISD Spring Creek Invitational.

Braswell advances to the quarterfinals and will meet 5A No. 4 Amarillo on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Mansfield Lake Ridge High School.

Six Lady Bengals scored in double figures led by Kennedy Evans’ 16. Yves Cox had 14, while Grambling commit Jazmyne Jackson, LSU commit Alisa Williams, and Tori Sevier chipped in 12 points each.

Journey Taylor had 10 points for Braswell.

Destiny Whitaker poured in 16 points for Summit, followed by Jaiona Jackson with 12 and Donterria Brown with 10.

Arlington Bowie 68, Arlington Seguin 39

The Volunteers bounced back from a first-round loss to advance to the consolation quarterfinals with a win over the Cougars.

Bowie (9-11) will meet Amarillo Tascosa at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday at Mansfield Timberview High School for a chance to reach the consolation semis.

Seguin (3-12) was led by Asia Johnson who contributed 16 points with 10 more from Kiera Braden.

The Volunteers dominated from the start behind Dakia Patton’s 19 points. Alaisha Brown chipped in 17 points for the Wolves and Seniya Wilson added 10.

Mansfield 40, Frisco Heritage 36

Mansfield advanced to the consolation quarterfinals with a hard-fought win over Frisco Heritage at the MISD Spring Creek Invitational.

The Tigers will face Huntsville at 8 a.m. on Wednesday at Mansfield High School for the right to meet Texarkana Liberty-Eylau in the consolation semifinals at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, also at Mansfield High. Liberty-Eylau defeated Arlington Martin 40-30 in the second round.

The game was tied at 26 after three quarters, but the Tigers were able to make five of eight free throws down the stretch and got a 3-point bucket from Bree Williams, who scored a team-high eight points.

De’Ariya Scales added seven points for Mansfield while Lau’ryn Williams had six points.

Sydney Young’s game-high 12 points led Heritage with Lexi Harrison tallying seven points for the Coyotes.
