Argyle upset by Melissa for first loss and more from the Fort Worth area in Week 6
Week 6 games
Melissa 21, Argyle 0
Melissa ended a nine-year, five-game winless drought over Argyle with a 21-0 win over the previously unbeaten and the state’s No. 1 ranked Class 4A Division 1 Eagles on Friday night at home.
The win also ended Argyle’s 20-game win streak, which dated back to Dec. 7, 2019, its 61-game district win streak that dates to 2008 and a regular-season win streak that dated back to 2015.
With the shutout win, Melissa also held Argyle scoreless for the first time since Nov. 3, 2006. In a nutshell, a lot things came to an end for Argyle and vaults Melissa as a front-runner for the District 7-4A Division 1 title.
Melissa (4-2, 2-0) turned over Argyle (4-1, 0-1) four times on the night – three times in the first half, which lead to all three of the Cardinals’ scores.
The teams traded punts and fumbles early in the first quarter, but after the Eagles turnover, Sam Fennegan scored from 2 yards out to give Melissa the early lead.
Early in the second quarter, despite having its best drive of the game to that point, Melissa’s Ryan Johnson intercepted a pass, which turned into another Cardinal touchdown run – this time from Nathan Adejokun.
Another fumble late in the quarter resulted in an Ashton Mitchell-Johnson TD run for Melissa.
From there, the Cardinal defense kept Argyle’s offense in check and forced more turnovers and punts to preserve the shutout win.
Mitchell-Johnson had 38 carries for 149 yards to lead Melissa, which only had 266 yards of offense on the night, but held Argyle to just 208 yards.
Birdville 40, Burleson Centennial 39
Birdville scored 26 straight points in the second half to rally past Burleson Centennial and ruined the Spartans homecoming. After getting down 33-14 early in the third quarter, the Hawks (3-2, 1-1 in District 4-5A Division 1) scored on their next four possessions to chip away at the Spartans (1-4, 0-2) lead.
Aiden Dollar tallied 294 total yards and five touchdowns to lead the charge for Birdville, including rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for another during the comeback bid.
Sekou Konate had 10 receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns for the Hawks.
On the other side, Centennial had two backs – David Clerk and Jaheim Ababio – go for more than 100 yards rushing. Clerk finished with 121 yards on just five carries and two scores.
Arlington Lamar 62, Arlington Bowie 49
While the final score looked close, it was all Arlington Lamar in a 62-49 win over Arlington Bowie to pick up its first win of the season.
Lamar scored 41 first-half points and forced four Bowie turnovers to cruise to the win.
The Vikings (1-4, 1-0 in District 8-6A) returned three of those turnovers for scores – twice in the second quarter and once in the third.
Jaden Morris completed 13 of his 15 passes for 281 yards and two scores to lead Lamar with eight of those passes going to Jaylon McCoy for 204 yards. DeAngelo Ponder led Bowie (1-5, 0-2) with 423 yards and four scores on 30-of-45 passing.
The teams combined for 1,022 yards on the night and 127 plays from scrimmage. In the third frame, the teams combined for 42 points while Bowie scored 14 in the fourth quarter.
Eaton 45, Byron Nelson 10
Eaton scored the game’s first 38 points and held a 31-0 lead at halftime on the way to a dominating victory over Byron Nelson.
JB Brown had 182 yards rushing and three scores to lead the the Eagles (5-1, 2-0 in District 4-6A) offensive attack, which racked up 452 total yards. Eaton scored on its first two possessions in the first quarter and never looked back in the win.
It held the Byron Nelson offense to just 43 yards in the first half, but by the time the offense got into gear it was too little too late. The Bobcats got their first points of the night midway through the third quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Gavin McCurley.
