Fossil Ridge gets first win over Byron and more from Fort Worth-area | Sept. 21, 2021

Keller Fossil Ridge 3, Byron Nelson 0

The Panthers made history on Tuesday night at home by beating the Bobcats for the first time in program history, 25-19, 25-22, 25-15 in a District 4-6A game. Fossil Ridge improved to 16-10 overall and 1-2 in district.

Byron, No. 7 in the Star-Telegram Class 6A area rankings, dropped to 17-15 and 1-3.

Byron had beaten Fossil Ridge in all 12 previous meetings. The Bobcats didn’t allow a set in any of the previous eight matches with the Panthers and were 36-3 in sets overall against Ridge.

Lainee Pyles led Ridge with 20 kills, hit .500, two aces, two blocks and 11 digs. Aaliyah Toppin added 11 kills and the Panthers hit .350 overall as a team. Iylan Collier and Sofia Valentin chipped in 20 and 15 assists.

Keatyn Rodgers led Byron with 21 assists while Brynn Bates had 19 digs.

Burleson 3, Burleson Centennial 2

Belle Davis had 14 kills and 13 digs, Katie Wong had 33 assists, and the Elks rallied back to upset the Spartans in District 8-5A, 25-12, 22-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-11 on Tuesday night.

The Elks improved to 16-19 overall and 4-0 in district.

Centennial, No. 6 in the 5A area rankings, dropped to 19-13 and 2-2.

Kendall Carlock led the Elks with 15 kills while Alyssa Davault added 10. Emma Dustin had 36 digs.

Keller 3, Keller Timber Creek 0

Coming off an upset over the Fort Worth-area’s No. 1 team in Class 6A in its previous game, Keller continued its hot start in District 4-6A with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-17 sweep over Timber Creek on Tuesday night.

The win improved Keller’s mark to 3-0 in district and 17-12 overall.

It also pushed the Indians into a tie for first place with Southlake Carroll, which had its district bye on Tuesday.

Keller, which moved up to No. 2 in the 6A area rankings after its win over Eaton last week, never trailed the entire night.

A block from Melanie McGann (West Virginia commit) pushed Keller’s lead to 12-6 in the first set. A block from Alisha Renete pulled Timber Creek (17-13, 1-3) within four. Jenna Clifford registered a kill through the Timber Creek block on set point for a 1-0 lead.

The Indians went up 3-0 and 6-1 in the second set to force a Timber Creek timeout, and then a McGann kill down the right side made it 10-3. Ava McCrary and Halle Sherlock (Yale) blocks kept the Falcons around, but McGann and Clifford pushed Keller to a 2-0 advantage.

McGann opened the third set with a block as Keller led 3-0 yet again. Alexa Ranete had back-to-back kills for the Falcons and Keller’s Reagan Sharp sent down a scorcher to give the Indians a 15-8 lead.

Leah Ford blocked a Timber Creek attempt to end the match. McGann finished with a game-high 14 kills, hit .400 and totaled five blocks. Ford added six kills and five blocks, and Taylor Polivka set 19 assists.

Justin Northwest 3, Richland 0

Texas commit MaKenna Miller registered 16 kills and hit .500 as the Texans stayed undefeated in District 6-5A with a 25-10, 25-21, 25-20 home sweep over the Royals on Tuesday.

Northwest, No. 3 in the Star-Telegram 5A rankings, led 6-0 and 19-5 in the opening set.

The Royals (12-19, 1-3) were able to pull within 22-21 in the second set before the Texans scored the final three points to grab a 2-0 lead. Madison Scrivner had a game-high 21 assists while Sophie Chambers put in a double-double with 19 assists and 15 digs.

Alyssa Rojo led Northwest with 17 digs. Julianna Green and Alexah Reyes added 16 and 14 digs.

Chisholm Trail 3, Euless Trinity 0

The Rangers moved into third place in District 3-6A with a home sweep over the Trojans.

Chisholm Trail improved to 3-1 and 19-11 overall. Trinity dropped to 2-2 and 21-13.

Three Rangers put in double-digit kills, led by Madisynne McQueen’s 13. Claire Duley and Kira Gonzales added 12 and 11 kills. Five Rangers had 10 digs, led by McQueen’s 18.

Jadyn Gillespie, the Fort Worth-area leader in assists, added to her season total with 34.

Saginaw 3, FW Arlington Heights 0

The Rough Riders, No. 7 in the 5A area rankings, swept the Yellow Jackets 25-13, 25-19, 25-14 at home on Tuesday night to improve to 4-0 in District 7-5A and 19-12 overall.

Heights dropped to 3-1 in district.

Saginaw opened the game with a 10-3 lead in the first set before taking a 1-0 lead in dominating fashion. Achol Mwer block sent the Rough Riders to an 8-6 and 22-17 lead in the second set.

Caroline Bacon assisted on a Mwer kill in the third set that forced a Heights’ timeout.
