Timber Creek rallies for first victory and more from Week 4 in the Fort Worth area
Week 4 games
Keller Timber Creek 40, West Mesquite 35
Keller Timber Creek quarterback Jacob Porter threw for four scores and ran for another as the Falcons rallied from 22 points down to defeat West Mesquite 40-35 in a non-district football game on Thursday at Keller ISD Stadium.
West Mesquite (2-2) took a 28-6 lead after running back Canaan Dirden scored on a 3-yard run with 7:30 left in the second quarter. Timber Creek (1-3) then proceeded to reel off 34 unanswered points.
“No one had to be a super hero and we knew it didn’t have to be anything special, just doing our job and things started rolling our way,” said Porter, who finished 19 of 27 passing for 229 yards and had 147 yards rushing on six carries.
Wide receiver Maddox Allbritton made a great catch on a 17-yard scoring pass from Porter to cut the lead to 28-12 with 1:07 left in the first half. The duo opened the scoring for TC with a 39-yard TD pitch and catch on the second play of the second quarter.
The Falcons scored four times after intermission while the defense, led by junior defensive end Jett Lund, was clamping down on West Mesquite.
Porter had TD passes of 17 yards to Lonnie Johnson and 33 yards to Jahrid Hughes. The scoring passes were sandwiched around an 8-yard TD run by Alec Souimaniphanh.
Allbritton was caught 10 passes for 101 yards and Souimaniphanh rushed 18 times for 103 yards.
West Mesquite did not punt in the first half, but had to kick the ball away on five of its first six possessions of the second half. Levar Thornton, Jr. halted the other drive with an interception. Porter’s perfect execution of a zone read resulted in a 69-yard TD run that put the game out of reach, 40-28, with 3:34 left.
“This was our homecoming and we just weren’t going let this be like just another game,” said Lund. “At the half we just decided that we were going to bust our tails and not give up without a fight.”
“It was so great to get a win going into the bye week and into district,” added Porter. “We had a bunch of close losses and we felt like we were there, doing a lot of stuff right, but we just had to finish one off and we finally got it.”
Mesquite 49, Arlington 35
A 22-point second quarter was too much for Arlington to handle in a 49-35 loss to Mesquite on Friday night at Choctaw Stadium.
Anthony Roberts rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns to lead Mesquite to the win. Arlington (1-3) fought back in the fourth with 21 points of its own, but could not keep Mesquite off the board.
The closest Arlington could get to Mesquite was at 41-35 after a 35-yard touchdown pass from Ryley Zalusky to Adam Lemonds. Roberts scored his second fourth-quarter TD to help Mesquite pull out the win.
Arlington Sam Houston 24, Keller Central 21
After building a 21-10 lead, Keller Central could not fend off a fourth-quarter comeback in Arlington Sam Houston’s 24-21 home victory on Friday night.
Keller Central (2-2) committed three turnovers – two interceptions and a fumble – in the fourth to help Sam Houston (3-1) steal the win.
The game-winner was a 29-yard touchdown pass from Justin Tone to Orlandus Scott to cap off a 10-play, 70-yard drive.
Melissa 48, Midlothian Heritage 28
Midlothian Heritage suffered its first loss of the season, 48-28 at Melissa on Friday night.
Melissa (2-2) racked up more than 600 yards of offense and scored twice in each of the first, second and third quarters to overwhelm the Heritage defense. The teams traded touchdowns on the first six possessions of the first game.
Quarterback Sam Fennegan threw for 390 yards and four scores to lead Melissa.
Heritage (3-1) had its opportunities, but costly turnovers thwarted any comeback bid. Quarterback Kaden Brown threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns, and added another on the ground to lead the Jaguars.
Kennedale 48, Wilmer-Hutchins 0
Kennedale virtually shut down everything it saw Friday night on its way to a 48-0 win over Wilmer-Hutchins.
Kennedale (2-1) only allowed 43 yards of offense for Wilmer-Hutchins, which committed three turnovers and were held to minus-13 yards on the ground.
Paul Donkor anchored the Kennedale attack with 157 yards rushing and two scores on only 10 rushing attempts.
Kennedale jumped out to a 20-0 lead after one and quickly added to it by half to cruise to the win.
Grapevine Faith 41, Nevada Community 7
In a cross-organization showdown, Grapevine Faith had little trouble with Nevada Community on the way to a 41-7 win on Friday night.
Clayton Sobeki rushed for three touchdowns and 121 yards in the win for Faith (4-0), which put up 333 yards of total offense and held Community (2-2) to just 147.
The game was never close as Faith scored the first 14 points and led 27-7 at halftime. A fumble return for a score pushed the Faith lead to 34-7.
Slobeki tacked on another score for good measure in the fourth. Faith held Community to just 26 yards passing.
