Virginia Tech lands commitment from top Fort Worth athlete and all-state selection
Fort Worth North Side 3-star athlete Da’Wain Lofton announced his commitment to Virginia Tech on Thursday.
He chose the Hokies over Penn State, Louisville, Arkansas State, Colorado, SMU, San Diego State, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Washington State.
“I had developed a great relationship with the staff and I felt that was the right place for me,” Lofton said.
Lofton has 22 offers according to 247Sports, which also includes Colorado State, Duke, East Carolina, Kansas, North Texas, Tulane, Tulsa, Army, Air Force, Illinois State and Texas Southern.
The upcoming senior exploded onto the scene after he was voted to the Class 5A all-state team - the program’s first- last season, helping the Steers to the playoffs for the first time in 40 years.
Lofton recorded 2,022 yards of total offense and accounted for 32 touchdowns while playing receiver and special teams. He caught 15 TDs, rushed for 14 and returned three scores.
Lofton added over 500 yards on special teams. In back-to-back games against Wylie East and Fort Worth Carter-Riverside, he recorded over 400 yards receiving combined and eight total TDs.
He was voted District MVP and to the Star-Telegram all-area football team.
A month after North Side’s season ended, Lofton received his first offer on Dec. 4 from Virginia Tech.
According to 247Sports, the 5-10 prospect is ranked as the No. 67 athlete in the country for the Class of 2021. Per 247Sports experts, Mississippi State was the favorite to land Lofton at 100%.
Lofton is the 16th player from the 2021 class to commit to Virginia Tech and first from Texas.
