With both teams’ history in girls soccer, Friday’s game between Southlake Carroll and Flower Mound wasn’t a typical 1 vs. 4 matchup in the first round.

But after Flower Mound scored in the 28th minute to tie the game at 1-1, the Dragons, the No. 5 team in the country, turned up the heat.

Carroll (22-1-2) got a hat trick from Oklahoma signee Taylor Tufts and the Dragons scored three second-half goals to beat the Jaguars 5-1 in a 6A Region I bi-district game at Northwest ISD Stadium.

“Honestly when they scored on us, it was just a big motivator,” senior Baylor signee Madeline Bryant said. “There are always nerves when it comes to the first playoff game. Flower Mound is a great team, so yes there were nerves, but it was more excited nerves than anything.

The Dragons controlled the possessions in the first half and Tufts took a Sarah Hornyak pass that hit the right post and bounced into the goal in the 18th minute.

Freshman Hanna Khan scored the game-winner in the 34th to push Carroll in front 2-1.

“I just want to win for the senior class. This is an amazing program,” Khan said.

Tufts scored two more times to push her career total to 66, tied with Kirstin Moran for fourth all-time in program history. Madi Drenowatz scored her 25th in the season in the 71st minute.

“It’s all about my team,” Tufts said. “They feed me the ball perfectly.”

Carroll wins a bi-district title for the 21st straight season.

Byron Nelson 2, Marcus 0

The Marauders won’t be making a return trip the 6A state final after the Bobcats knocked them off in a 6A Region I bi-district game at Denton High School.

Mykenna Russo put the Bobcats (12-5-6) on the board in the 6th minute after getting a pass from Jadyn Lopez. Byron Nelson added to its total in the 62nd minute when Kennedy Dahlin found Cassidy Bell for the score.

Nelson faces Mansfield, which beat Lake Highlands, in the area round.
