Days before its biggest game, Fort Bend Marshall in mourning following player’s death

Tragedy struck the Fort Bend Marshall football team on Monday night just days before the Buffalos were set to play in their first-ever UIL state semifinal game.

According to a report by ABC13, senior defensive back Drew Coney was killed in a domestic dispute. According to the report, police said Conley and his uncle were arguing inside a home when shots were fired just before midnight. Conley and his uncle exchanged threats then the uncle followed Conley into his bedroom before shooting him in the leg.

The uncle claimed it was self-defense and no charges have been filed at the time of the report, which went on to state that Conley was driven to the hospital by his girlfriend where he later died from his injuries.

Marshall (14-0), which is ranked as the No. 4 Class 5A team in the state, is scheduled to play Calallen in the 5A Division II semifinals at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at San Antonio’s Farris Stadium.

The Buffs are coming off a 47-43 victory over Huntsville in the quarterfinals. Trailing 43-40 with 33 seconds left, Marshall faced a fourth-and-12 when Korey King reversed it to Devon Achane, who thew downfield to Dalevon Campbell for the game-winning 47-yard TD.

According to MaxPreps, Conley played in six games and recorded 38 tackles, four for loss with one interception and two pass deflections.
