Texas commit leads DFW in kills this season; She and nine others named All-Americans

The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced the 2018 Under Armour Girls High School All-America Teams. A record 793 nominations were submitted through the AVCA and MaxPreps, resulting in 150 All-America and Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Dallas-Fort Worth was represented by four players among the first, second and third teams including three on second team.

Each player on first team will be invited to play in the Under Armour All-America volleyball game, December 14 at the Target Center in Minneapolis in conjunction with the 2018 AVCA Convention.

FIRST TEAM

Madi Whitmire, Sr., Setter, Prosper

The UConn commit has helped the Eagles to a 79-15 record during her two years as the starting setter, including a win last season to capture the Class 5A state championship.

Whitmire has been one of the top setters in the state again this season as Prosper has moved on to the 6A Region II area round. She has 1,380 assists, 27 games of 30 or more and 10 double-doubles this year. She recorded a season-high 70 assists in the Eagles’ 3-2 win over Lovejoy on Aug. 31.

In her two years, Whitmire has amassed over 3,100 assists and nearly 600 digs. She had 1,761 assists last season.

SECOND TEAM

Audrey Nalls, Sr., Outside Hitter, Waxahachie

Nalls, who’s committed to TCU, will go down as one of the best, if not the best hitter to play for the Indians. Nalls recently recorded her 684th career kill this season, surpassing the school-record she set as a sophomore.

She also has a .302 hitting percentage this year along with 350 digs and a career-high 62 aces. The Indians are playing in the 6A Region I area round with a 43-4 record.

In four years, Nalls has accounted for 1,972 kills, 886 digs, 390 blocks and 128 aces. The Indians are 155-37 in her career.

Molly Phillips, Sr., Middle Blocker, Mansfield

The 6-foot-5 Texas commit continues to lead Dallas-Fort Worth with 751 kills on the season, which also ranks as sixth most in the country according to MaxPreps.

Mansfield is 35-13 this season and playing in the 6A Region I area round following a bi-district win over Duncanville where Phillips recorded a game-high 16 kills, five aces and five blocks.

The Tigers have won 62 games the past two seasons. Phillips has 1,406 kills, 727 digs, 151 blocks and 124 aces in that span.

McKenzie Nichols, Sr., Setter, Southlake Carroll

Another TCU commit, Nichols put in 31 assists and 14 digs as the Dragons knocked off three-time defending 6A state champion Hebron to advance to the 6A Region I area round.

Those marks pushed Nichols’ total on the season to 344 digs and 1,258 assists, which is best among Fort Worth area teams. She has set a career high in assists, blocks and kills this year.

Carroll improved to 36-9 and has gone 117-24 in Nichols’ three years including a trip to the regional final and regional quarterfinal. Nichols has recorded 2,803 assists and 901 digs in her career.
