One game does not a season make, TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle very well knows.

One inning in one game? Different story.

TCU relievers Ryan Burnett and Preston Guillory combined to hit four batters, give up two home runs and surrender eight runs in the seventh inning of a 9-1 loss to Dallas Baptist on Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium.

The inning included a throwing error on an infield single and a two-run double and sank TCU (24-8), which has lost three out of five, including two in a row at home.

Just an ugly, ugly inning on the mound.

“Just an ugly, ugly inning on the mound,” Schlossnagle said. “For one inning. Which in baseball is all it has to be.”

David Martinelli’s three-run home run made it 4-1 after a hit batsman and the infield single and throwing error began the inning off Burnett (1-1). He hit the next two batters with the first pitch, and Guillory came in.

Guillory’s first pitch hit Camden Duzenack, who had squared to bunt, loading the bases. Daniel Sweet doubled for a 6-1 lead, then Garrett Wolforth crushed the next pitch to right center for a three-run home run that made it 9-1.

It all happened without an out being recorded.

“Tonight we pitched just as bad as you can possibly pitch,” Schlossnagle said. “I know this sounds cliche, but you’re never as good or as bad as you think you are. I used to panic over one game. As Coach Parcells said, your record is who you are. So we’ll see at the end of the season what kind of team we have.”

For a second consecutive game at home, TCU was out-hit. Dallas Baptist (21-10) had 13 hits to the Horned Frogs’ five. Last week, UT Arlington had 13 hits to the Frogs’ six.

“If there’s anything I’m upset about, it’s two midweek games in a row now we haven’t been very competitive at home plate,” Schlossnagle said. “But we’ll see. We’ll see how the season plays out. It’s certainly disappointing to be on the road forever and come back in two home games and play like this.”

TCU starter Rex Hill allowed a run in 4.1 innings, and Schlossnagle called it “a bright spot.”

Evan Skoug was 2-for-3 with a walk, but he was thrown out tagging up on a line drive to right field with two on and no outs in the fourth inning in a 1-1 game.

TCU scored its only run on a throwing error.

Austen Wade, Luken Baker and Mason Hesse had the only other hits for TCU. Second baseman Cam Warner lost his 20-game hitting streak, TCU’s longest in five years.

TCU returns to Big 12 play on Friday when Oklahoma visits to start a three-game series. The Frogs are 3.5 games behind conference leader Texas Tech.
