Eight-run fifth inning helps TCU overpower Kansas, secure series
TCU unleashed an 18-hit attack and broke open the game with eight runs in the fifth inning to forge a come-from-behind 14-6 victory over Kansas in Big 12 baseball on Sunday.
The Frogs (24-7, 6-3 Big 12) secured the series. Following its 4-3 loss to Kansas in the series opener, TCU took the last two games by a combined score of 22-6.
TCU hit three home runs Sunday and added seven doubles.
Austen Wade and Cam Warner each had four hits at the top of the lineup. Dane Steinhagen and Ryan Merrill each had three RBIs.
Five players had multi-hit games.
TCU scored four or more runs in an inning for the 26th time this season.
Warner stretched his hitting streak to 20 games, notched his 10th multi-hit game and his eighth multiple-RBI game of the season.
Ryan Burnett pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief. He gave up no runs and only one hit.
Trailing 4-3 going into the fifth inning, the Frogs unleashed a hitting barrage that put the Jayhawks (12-18, 2-7) into a deficit they couldn’t overcome.
The Frogs had six hits in the inning, all for extra bases.
Elliott Barzilli began the rally with a double. Josh Watson was hit by a pitch. Connor Wanhanen loaded the bases with a walk.
Steinhagen cleared them with a double, giving TCU a 6-4 lead. Merrill followed with a home run. Wade and Warner followed with back-to-back doubles and Evan Skoug launched a two-run home run that gave the Frogs an 11-4 lead.
In other Big 12 action, Texas Tech completed its sweep of Oklahoma State with a 15-5 victory in a game that was stopped after seven innings.
Michael Davis went 3-for-4 with seven RBIs for the Red Raiders (24-9, 11-1).
Kansas State salvaged the last game of its series with visiting Texas (14-18, 5-4) when three pitchers combined on a 3-2 victory.
