Senior guard Zahna Medley scored 27 points as the TCU women defeated Kansas State 87-73 on Saturday afternoon at Schollmaier Arena.

The Horned Frogs moved to 2-0 in the Big 12 for the first time after shooting 51 percent from the field and hitting 18 of 20 free throws. TCU is 10-3 overall.

TCU set a school record for points in a Big 12 game with 87, hitting 11 of 22 on 3-point attempts. The Frogs’ previous Big 12 best was 86 against Iowa State on Jan. 7, 2015.

I felt that we handled adversity well down the stretch.

The Frogs had a decisive 37-25 edge in rebounding.

“I thought we did a great job executing the defensive game plan,” TCU coach Raegan Pebley said via the TCU website. “There is never a perfect game, so there are possessions coaches are thinking about that we made mistakes. … I felt that we handled adversity well down the stretch.”

Medley hit five 3-pointers and also had four assists, three rebounds and three steals against the Wildcats (10-3, 0-2), who are coached by former TCU coach Jeff Mittie.

Forward Veja Hamilton had 18 points for TCU, and guard AJ Alix had 14 points and 10 assists.

Kindred Wesemann led K-State with 21 points and Breanna Lewis had 17 and seven rebounds.

The Frogs led 20-17 after the first quarter, 37-30 at halftime and 64-51 after three quarters.

TCU’s margin went to 17 after a 3-pointer by Alix early in the final quarter.

The Wildcats cut the lead to 75-71 with 3:09 to play on Wesemann’s 3-pointer. Alix, however, came back with a jump shot to build the lead to six again and K-State never got closer.

TCU closed on a 10-2 run, including six free throws from Medley in the final 1:09.

“Their leading scorers got their shots,” Mittie said. “Veja Hamilton got her mid-range shot, she is very good at it. Zahna Medley got a little bit of everything, which she is very good at. AJ Alix was a player. We have to do better against other team’s top players.”
