On a recent podcast and again while speaking to the media at spring camp, Horned Frogs head coach Sonny Dykes referenced trying to cut down on turnovers at the quarterback position this season.
Hoover threw for 9,629 yards and 71 touchdown passes while going 19-12 as a starter with TCU — but with 33 interceptions and nine lost fumbles.
Cignetti offered two reasons why turnovers won’t be a problem for Hoover at Indiana.
“We’ve got to clean up some of the turnovers, obviously, which Coach Dykes made light of,” Cignetti told reporters. “But when Josh got here, he met his two new best friends: great defense and a really good run game, and he was never the same after that.”
Indiana is coming off a stunning run to the program’s first national championship, powered by quarterback Fernando Mendoza, a transfer from Cal who in one season went from unheralded to the Heisman Trophy winner and a near-lock to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft.
Hoover has a tough act to follow, but his new coach says he has confidence in him.
“I’m excited about Josh, first of all,” Cignetti told reporters. “Let’s be clear about that. And he’s got a body of work in terms of winning football games, passing yards, touchdown passes.”
