How have Texas team fared in the first round of the NCAA Tournaments?
The first round of the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournament is underway and nine teams from the Lone Star state are participating across both tournaments.
How many schools from Texas won during the opening round of March Madness?
Men
Texas: The Longhorns were the first Texas men’s team to play in the tournament. They made a quick exit in the tournament, falling 86-80 to Xavier in the First Four on Wednesday, March 19.. The Longhorns were the only team on the men’s side from Texas to not advance past the first round.
Houston: A top seed, the Cougars beat SIU Edwardsville, 78-40, dominating from the opening tip led by Milos Uzan and LJ Cryer who combined for 31 points and seven of the team’s 11 assists. They will play Gonzaga in the second round.
Texas A&M: A popular first-round upset pick the Aggies avoided an upset, beating Yale 80-71 in the first round. The Aggies will play Michigan next, a team that narrowly avoided an upset against UC San Diego.
Texas Tech: The Red Raiders Kerwin Walton scored 27 points with three rebounds and two assists to lead all scorers in the team’s 82-72 victory over UNC Wilmington. The Red Raiders will play No. 11 seeded Drake, fresh off it’s upset of No. 6 Missouri.
Baylor: The Bears got contributions from across their entire starting lineup with four of their five starters scoring in double figures in their razor-thin 75-72 win over Mississippi State. The Bears will play Duke in the Round of 32.
Women
Stephen F. Austin: They came in playing a Notre Dame team that struggled to end the season but was at one point ranked No. 1 in the country. The Fighting Irish looked closer to the latter than the former in the 106-54 victory over the LadyJacks.
TCU: The Horned Frogs got off to a slow start against Farleigh Dickinson but a hot second quarter by Madison Conner, who scored 10 points in the frame, helped put them up eight at halftime and they never looked back winning 73-51.
Baylor: The Bears were on upset alert in the first half only leading Grand Canyon by three points, but Aaronette Vonleh’s team-leading 25 points, 11 rebounds and two assists helped push Baylor over the top in its 73-60 victory. The Bear will play the winner of the game between Ole Miss and Ball State.
Texas: The No. 1 seed in their region, the Longhorns, will be the last team from Texas to begin their March Madness journey. They will play William and Mary at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday at the Moody Center.
