TCU football has found its next safeties coach
TCU football has found its next safeties coach.
The Star-Telegram was able to confirm multiple reports that Sonny Dykes is hiring California defensive backs coach Tre Watson as the new safeties coach and pass game coordinator.
Watson will replace Paul Gonzales, a longtime assistant who recently departed to become the cornerbacks coach at rival Baylor.
Watson has spent the last four seasons at Cal after spending a season as the defensive backs coach at UNLV in 2020. During his time in Berkley Watson helped the Golden Bears become a ballhawking unit as Cal tied for a national lead with 28 turnovers gained in 2023.
Watson developed multiple draft picks at Cal with three former players on active rosters including former All-American safeties Elijah Hicks.
He also helped Cal secure multiple top-20 transfer portal classes as well. Originally from Seattle, Watson played three seasons for Washington and eventually earned a scholarship before his redshirt junior season after he joined the program as a walk-on from Central Washington.
Watson will have a lot to work during his first season in Fort Worth as TCU returns standouts Bud Clark and Jamel Johnson at safety. The Horned Frogs also signed LSU transfer Kylin Jackson, a former four-star safety.
