Sonny Dykes takes in TCU Super Regional contest: ‘Soak it in, see you in Omaha’
TCU head football coach Sonny Dykes was at Lupton Stadium on Saturday, cheering on the Horned Frogs baseball team against Indiana State in the Super Regional.
In his first season, Dykes made his mark on TCU athletics when he took the Horned Frogs football team on a magical postseason run.
After an unbeaten regular season and a loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship, TCU became the first school in Texas to win a college football playoff game, beating Michigan 51-45 to reach the National Championship game. Georgia beat the Horned Frogs in the title game.
Dykes was spotted at a few TCU basketball games as they sought a spot in March Madness.
On Saturday, he and his family are sitting front row, watching TCU’s baseball team.
When the last out was recorded, TCU starting pitcher Sam Stoutenborough said his mom was sitting by Dykes and gave him a fist bump. He even gave him some advice.
“Soak it in, see you in Omaha,” Dykes told her.
“It was surreal,” said Stoutenborough.
With the success of football, basketball and baseball, Stoutenborough said it’s an exciting time to be a Horned Frog athlete.
“[TCU] is an everything school,” added the Horned Frog second baseman Tre Richardson.
Head coach Kirk Sarloos was appreciative of the support, which he said makes TCU a special place.
“It’s a lot of fun because It’s a tight-knit athletic department,” he said. “Every team supports every other one.”
The Horned Frog basketball team, along with head coach Jamie Dixon, was in attendance for the first game of the series.
