TCU receiver Derius Davis named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week
TCU wide receiver Derius Davis has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week.
Davis had a 60-yard punt return touchdown in the season opener at Colorado that put TCU ahead for good.
Davis’ punt return was the lone score for TCU in the first half as the offense struggled to find an early rhythm on the road. Head coach Sonny Dykes said Davis’ big play helped turn the tide.
“For us, having Derius make that play was a big confidence boost for us. Colorado came out and they were playing really hard and really fast. They were playing at a really high level,” Dykes said. “But I felt like at that point we were kind of on our heels and then Derius made a play and I think it changed our mindset to a degree.”
It was his fourth punt return touchdown in his career, tying KaVontae Turpin’s record. Davis has five special teams touchdowns and needs one more kickoff return score to tie Turpin in that area too.
Turpin, now with the Dallas Cowboys, congratulated Davis on social media after Davis said he molded his game after Turpin and viewed him as a big brother.
“I’m so proud of you brudda! Now go break the record lil brudda,” Turpin said on Twitter.
