TCU basketball set to lose its first player to the NCAA transfer portal this offseason
TCU junior guard Francisco Farabello is headed to the NCAA’s transfer portal, a source confirmed Monday.
Farabello has submitted the paperwork to transfer but has not been officially placed in the portal yet. He just completed his third season with the Horned Frogs, averaging 4.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 19 minutes per game.
Farabello was limited to nine games during the 2020-21 season, dealing with COVID-related protocols. As a true freshman in 2019-20, Farabello averaged 3.7 points and 2.2 assists in 20.6 minutes per game.
Farabello had a lesser-than-expected role this season as his shooting percentages dipped from the previous two seasons. Farabello shot 38.5% from the field and 38.4% from 3-point range this year. He had been at 40-plus percent the previous two seasons.
Farabello is TCU’s first player to depart this offseason. He’ll have as many as two years of eligibility remaining as the NCAA froze eligibility amid the pandemic in 2020-21.
TCU could have returned every player who played meaningful minutes next season but that will not be the case with Farabello leaving.
The big question for the Frogs remains the future of sophomore guard Mike Miles. Miles is mulling whether to return for his junior season, or pursue a professional career. Miles told the Star-Telegram on Saturday that he expects to make his decision within the next week or so.
Black chooses Arkansas
TCU was in the mix but didn’t land Duncanville product and five-star point guard Anthony Black.
Black announced his commitment to Arkansas on Monday night before the McDonald’s All-American game in Chicago.
Along with Arkansas and TCU, Black’s final five included Gonzaga, Oklahoma State and the G League.
Black averaged 13.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.2 steals for the Class 6A state championship-winning team at Duncanville. Duncanville is coached by David Peavy, the father of TCU guard Micah Peavy.
TCU’s 2022 class has one player in it with a commitment from Crosby’s PJ Haggerty. Coach Jamie Dixon has said the program will take fewer high school players going forward as it shifts the priority to landing players via the NCAA’s transfer portal.
