TCU baseball to adjust its rotation going into Big 12 play
TCU baseball is adjusting its rotation going into Big 12 play.
Sophomore right-hander Riley Cornelio is scheduled to start for the Frogs on Friday night as they open conference play at Baylor. The Saturday and Sunday starters are to be announced but it appears that sophomore right-hander Cam Brown is in the mix for one of the spots.
Brown pitched only one inning during his start in TCU’s 17-6 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday night.
Junior left-hander Austin Krob opened the season as the Frogs’ Friday night starter and got off to a promising start. Krob didn’t allow a run over 10 innings in his first two starts. He’s regressed in his last two starts, though, allowing seven runs over two innings at Kentucky on March 4 and two runs on seven hits over five innings against Army on Sunday.
Cornelio has the highest ERA of any starter through four games (4.79), but he’s also had a pair of a seven strikeout games. In his last start against Army on Saturday, Cornelio allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts over five innings.
For the season, Cornelio is 1-1 with a 4.79 ERA.
Brown, Krob and Brett Walker are all options to start the final two games of the Baylor series. Similar to Krob, Walker got off to a fast start but struggled in his last start. Walker allowed five runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings against Army on Saturday.
Brown, meanwhile, joined the program as a highly-touted prospect coming out of Flower Mound. He allowed one run on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts in one inning of work Tuesday. In his previous three starts, Brown was 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA.
Walker is 2-0 with a 3.33 ERA in four starts, while Krob is 2-0 with a 4.76 ERA in four starts.
TCU (12-4) is riding a four-game winning streak, sweeping Army last weekend and knocking off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday.
TCU swept a three-game series against Baylor last season in Fort Worth. This will be the Frogs’ first trip to Waco since the 2018 season, when the Bears swept a three-game series.
