Who is expected to join Sonny Dykes’ staff at TCU? Here’s the latest ...
SMU offensive coordinator Garrett Riley is in agreement to follow Sonny Dykes to TCU, sources confirmed to the Star-Telegram on Monday.
Riley has been Dykes’ offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. The Mustangs have the nation’s 13th-ranked total offense this season, and they were 12th in 2020.
Riley, the brother of former Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley who is now at USC, joins several other SMU offensive assistants expected to follow Dykes. Along with Riley, TCU is expected to add A.J. Ricker (offensive line) and Ra’Shaad Samples (running backs) from SMU. SMU defensive line coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe and strength and conditioning coach Kaz Kazadi are others expected to join Dykes’ staff.
So is Texas Tech’s Mark Tommerdahl as special teams coordinator and Bryan Carrington from USC to serve as a running backs analyst and recruiting coordinator. Carrington was on Texas’ staff from 2017-20 under Tom Herman.
Dykes is expected to retain TCU assistants Malcolm Kelly (wide receivers) and Paul Gonzales (safeties). So that leaves three openings of the 10 on-field assistant coaches allowed by the NCAA (Riley, Ricker, Samples, Gru, Uzo-Diribe, Kelly and Gonzales).
Of those openings is arguably the most important hire Dykes will make — defensive coordinator.
Former TCU coach Gary Patterson has called the defense for the last 24 years. Dykes is reportedly in the process of interviewing candidates. Among those on Dykes’ list is expected to include Georgia co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, a McKinney Boyd product, according to a source.
It’s unknown if Schumann would have mutual interest but he is a candidate. But Dykes has other targets who are unknown at this point.
