TCU football’s Tre Tomlinson earns weekly defensive honors from Big 12
TCU cornerback Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson had his first career pick-six against Texas Tech on Saturday. That play helped him earn Big 12 defensive player of the week honors for the first time in his career.
Tomlinson became the first TCU defender to earn weekly defensive honors this season. TCU running back Zach Evans is the only other Horned Frog to win a weekly award this season as he was the league’s offensive player of the week in Week 2.
Tomlinson also had four tackles in TCU’s 52-31 victory at Texas Tech.
The pick-six came in the first half. Tech QB Henry Colombi had a high throw glance off Myles Price’s hands and into those of Tomlinson, who returned it 29 yards for the score.
That was the second TD in a 14-second stretch to start the second quarter as TCU extended a 14-7 lead to 28-7.
“It was a play that I had seen on film,” Tomlinson said afterward. “I got a good ball key, saw the quarterback hop and once he hopped the ball came out. I was sitting right there and I saw it was a high ball. I knew it was going to be tipped, so I stayed in my position that I was in and it came right to me.
“My second nature is to get to the house. I know how to get to the house.”
Tomlinson is TCU’s third-leading tackler with 27, including two for loss, this season.
Other honorees announced Monday included Oklahoma’s Kennedy Brooks (offensive player of the week); OU’s Gabe Brkic (special teams); and OU’s Caleb Williams (newcomer).
TCU (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) travels to No. 4 Oklahoma (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. in Norman.
Injury update
TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston has a “better chance” to play Saturday at Oklahoma, coach Gary Patterson said on a conference call Monday.
Johnston sat out the Texas Tech game after injuring his knee during the Texas game two weeks ago.
“There’s a better chance that he’s going to play now. We’ll see,” Patterson said. “Any of those guys who went out will be questionable going forward until we know more about it come Tuesday or Wednesday. It was a hard surface (at Texas Tech).”
Johnston is tied for the team lead with two receiving touchdowns, and ranks third with 170 yards receiving on 12 catches.
Briefly
▪ Patterson said the team didn’t practice on Sunday as they normally do. Patterson pointed to the number of guys nursing injuries after playing on the hard surface at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock.
▪ The TCU-West Virginia game on Oct. 23 in Fort Worth has not been given a kickoff time yet. The Big 12 is using the six-day window before announcing kickoff times that weekend.
Editor’s note: TCU writer Drew Davison votes on the Big 12’s weekly awards. His selections this week went to Brooks (offensive); Hodges-Tomlinson (defensive); Brkic (special teams); and Texas WR Xavier Worthy (newcomer).
