Early season football games in North Texas always have the chance of battling the heat. Saturday’s TCU game is another example with temperatures expected to be in the mid-90s and the heat index value pushing 100 for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.

Fans attending the game will likely make a visit or two (or more) to a WaterMonster located throughout Amon G. Carter Stadium.

The WaterMonster is a 125-gallon tank filled with cold-filtered water, or the equivalent of 1,000 bottles of water. The configuration stands 6 feet tall and has six spigots for fans to fill their own bottles or paper cups. Fans are allowed to bring one unopened bottle of water with them into the game.

The WaterMonsters were a popular gathering spot during TCU’s season-opening victory over Duquesne last Saturday night.

“Our new and enhanced hydration stations have been really well received,” TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati said. “We hope that fans will continue to take advantage of them on Saturday.”

Outside of the WaterMonster, fans will surely seek shade in the concourse areas.

TCU’s players have become accustomed to the heat and have dealt with it for years. Practice started at 4 p.m. most days throughout fall camp and lasted two hours.

For Cal, it may be a different story. Temperatures in the Bay Area this week have been in the 70s. But the Golden Bears do have 12 players on their roster from Texas so they’ve surely let their teammates know about the heat down here.

And, judging by a few comments made by Cal coach Justin Wilcox, it seems the focus is on TCU rather than the hot conditions.

“They are what I think we’ve come to know TCU as — they are athletic across the board,” Wilcox said, according to 247Sports. “You look on offense with their backs, their receivers, their quarterback and his athleticism. They run a spread offense and are very, very efficient. The quarterback is a very good player.

“Defensively, they are very aggressive. Coach Patterson is known for 4-2-5 nickel, a lot of quarters. The corners play a ton of man-to-man and challenge you. The safeties are involved with really tight coverage and in the run game. And then they are good up front. It is a very talented team.”
