Patterson says TCU football didn’t have the best week of practice going into Baylor game
TCU football didn’t have the best week of practice going into Saturday’s Baylor game, coach Gary Patterson said on his radio show Thursday night.
“We didn’t practice as well as we would’ve liked to practice this week after coming off the Oklahoma game,” Patterson told host and ‘Voice of the Horned Frogs’ Brain Estridge. “The bottom line to it is you have to grow up at some point in time and you have to get yourself ready to play and get yourself ready to go.
“So if [Thursday’s] practice was of anything, it’s not going to be a good Saturday.”
TCU is off to a 1-3 start, the worst since Patterson became coach in 2001. Baylor, meanwhile, is 1-2 under first-year coach Dave Aranda.
Patterson is 8-4 in his career against Baylor, including wins in four of the last five games. The Bears had a 29-23 triple-overtime victory in Fort Worth last season.
Patterson went on to discuss one of his sayings that players have to hate losing more than they like winning, something that is being ingrained in the team. Both cornerback Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson and tight end Carter Ware mentioned the saying when they met with reporters this week.
At the end of the day, Patterson said, “You’ve got to quit feeling sorry for yourself and fight back.”
Briefly
▪ TCU and Baylor are both cleared to play in Saturday’s game following the final COVID tests on Friday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. in Waco.
▪ Patterson acknowledged the significant setback of losing cornerback Noah Daniels to an injury in the Oklahoma game on his radio show. Patterson said Daniels was likely the team’s MVP through the first four games.
▪ Patterson pointed to takeaways as an area TCU must improve. The Frogs had no takeaways against the Sooners, which led the Big 12 in giveaways going into last week’s game. For the season, TCU has four takeaways, tied for second-fewest in the Big 12.
