Here’s the latest on TCU defender Marcel Brooks, who hinted he may be leaving program
TCU defender Marcel Brooks is staying with the program, a source told the Star-Telegram on Monday afternoon.
“He is a Frog,” the source said.
Brooks’ status came into question from comments he made during an Instagram Live video earlier Monday, suggesting he had left the program.
Brooks, the LSU transfer and a former five-star prospect out of Flower Mound Marcus, told his 34,500 followers on Instagram he would be pursuing things outside of football. But a source said Brooks and coach Gary Patterson met shortly after the video and Brooks remains with the team.
Instagram’s format automatically deletes live videos when they are completed and they can’t be viewed again. Brooks made an additional post saying there is more than just X’s and O’s, referring to life is bigger than just football.
Brooks has two tackles in two games this season. He was sidelined with an injury during TCU’s 21-14 loss to Kansas State on Saturday.
Brooks is viewed as a versatile defender who can play all three levels of the defense (safety, linebacker and pass rusher). But he’s yet to crack the starting lineup on defense for the Frogs, seeing most of his action on special teams. He struggled as a pass rusher against Texas two weeks ago when he was pancaked by Longhorns left tackle and highly-touted NFL Draft prospect Samuel Cosmi.
As a true freshman for eventual national champion LSU in 2019, Brooks played in 11 games with eight tackles, including 1.5 sacks.
TCU is off this week before facing Oklahoma on Oct. 24. Kickoff for that game has been set for 11 a.m. at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
