Will TCU have a first-round pick in next month’s NFL draft? Let’s look at some mocks.
It’s NFL mock draft season.
A new wave of mock drafts are circulating after last week’s scouting combine. TCU has first-round candidates in cornerback Jeff Gladney, defensive tackle Ross Blacklock and wide receiver Jalen Reagor.
The Horned Frogs had a first-round selection last year when the Seattle Seahawks took defensive end L.J. Collier with the 29th overall pick. If TCU lands another player in the first-round, it’ll be the first time the program has produced first-round selections in consecutive drafts since 1960-61 (Jack Spikes and Bob Lilly).
TCU sent seven players to the combine, the most among Big 12 schools, and most of the players made favorable impressions.
But there were disappointing moments, too, such as slower-than-desired 40-yard times by Reagor and running back Darius “Jet” Anderson.
With that being said, here’s a look at where the mock drafts have TCU players going —
Gladney
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report: First round, Kansas City Chiefs (32nd overall)
Says Miller: “In this mock, it’s all about an impact cornerback. ... Gladney measures just over 5-foot-10 but plays much bigger, especially in press coverage and when taking on ball-carriers in the run game.”
Kevin Hanson of Sports Illustrated: First round, Kansas City Chiefs (32nd overall)
Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports: Second round, Carolina Panthers (38th overall)
Dane Brugler of The Athletic: Second round, Denver Broncos (46th overall)
Blacklock
Dane Brugler of The Athletic: First round, Seattle Seahawks (27th overall)
Says Brugler: “If Seattle is unable to re-sign Jarran Reed, defensive tackle immediately becomes one of the more important needs this offseason.”
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network: First round, Kansas City Chiefs (32nd overall)
Says Jeremiah: “Blacklock would wreak havoc next to the franchise-tagged Chris Jones.”
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report: Second round, Arizona Cardinals (40th overall)
Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports: Second round, Denver Broncos (46th overall)
Reagor
Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports: First round, New Orleans Saints (24th overall)
Says Edholm: “Reagor looked a little too bulked up at the combine, but that quickness didn’t disappear. And he just might faint after his first practice seeing the accuracy of [Drew] Brees compared to the scattershot passers he dealt with at TCU.”
Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports: First round, Indianapolis Colts via trade with San Francisco (31st overall)
Says Trapasso: “The Colts have tons of draft ammo, and the 49ers will desperately be trying to trade back. Supply, meet demand. Reagor and Parris Campbell will be fun, blazing fast options in [Colts coach Frank] Reich’s system for many years.
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report: Second round, Indianapolis Colts (44th overall)
Dane Brugler of The Athletic: Second round, Atlanta Falcons (47th overall)
Lucas Niang
(Niang continues his rehab from season-ending hip surgery and did not participate in any tests at the combine. He’s expected to test at TCU’s pro day on March 27.)
Dane Brugler of The Athletic: Third round, Indianapolis Colts (75th overall)
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report: Third round, Denver Broncos (95th overall)
Rest of the Horned Frogs
Running backs Darius Anderson and Sewo Olonilua are viewed as Day 3 picks, while left guard Cordel Iwuagwu could also be a late-round consideration.
Other players who hope to shine at pro day include tackles Anthony McKinney and David Bolisomi; defensive backs Innis Gaines, Vernon Scott and Julius Lewis; defensive end Shameik Blackshear; and kicker Jonathan Song.
